-=Jeff=- has done the conversion, and I am trying to finish my own car. As long as you get all the parts, and they are in good condition, it's not too much work. However, it is expensive. To get all of the parts you need, in good working order, my guess is probably about $5,000. You will also need to cut holes in your firewall for the clutch master cylinder and cut a hole in your transmission tunnel for the transmission. I haven't finished my own car because I don't have enough free time, and I also rebuilt everything, but if your car is in good working order, and you have the means and time, don't be afraid to do it since you've already invested money in your car anyway.
This topic has appeared may times. The main problem seems to be that the trans. tunnel on the auto is different than that of the stick. The only way to make the transition is to find a wrecked stick , cut out the tunnel area and install it on your car after you remove yours. A major PIA let alone the expense. It was the consensus that it would be much cheaper just to go out and buy a stick.
It maybe more economical to swap you parts into a 6 speed car and then sell your car. As I see you have a bunch of mods, it maybe be an option to buy a wreck 6 speed parts car and then swap what you need and then part it out.
Re: C4 convertion from auto to manual ? (dgoodhue)
I did this to my 86. Search the archive for my username, tommelton, also look here for the tunnel pics...towards the bottom. http://home.attbi.com/~tmelton/86z51.html
Let me know if you cannot find the archived posts.
Re: C4 convertion from auto to manual ? (tommelton)
I did this to two vettes. It is not hard, but its the little things that can be a PITA. If I had to do it again, I would shifting gears is much better than putting it in D. Also I happen to like the flat dash, and finding a 89 with a ZF is almost impossible. Look at Tom Melton's pic he has some good ones in there that you should look at.
