uh, ok. I don't wish to jinx you... but there is an exception to every rule... congrats on the odd ball!
in a street race with an L98, the LT1 would loose if it was a short run, but in a slightly longer run, past 60mph, the LT1 will cream the L98. (this is stock vs stock, all things being equal).
I agree with everything Andy has said here except for this one. Depending on the driver, this ain't happening.
My timeslip above is from the track, but if you look at the reaction times, you'll see we both left at the same time. But the LT1 car beat the L98 car in every aspect there. So every car and every driver is different.
Just because my LT1 beat an L98 doesn't mean all of them will just as if an L98 car beats an LT1, it won't beat all of them, stock or otherwise.

thats exactly why I added "all things being equal"... that is about all I remember from statistics (or was that sadistics) in college. :D
I'm in the beginning stages of looking for a C4. I've narrowed my search down to 1990 - 1996. I'd really prefer a 6 speed. My question is: What are the basic differences between an L98 and a LT1? (other than the obvious 50 HP) Also, is there any significant performance difference? Thanks for any enlightenment that you can provide.
I agree with some of the other posts. Buy the car in the best condition with the lowest miles. It's cheaper and more convenient to spend the money now than later.
Since you are in Northern Virginia you should check out Coopers Corvettes in Triangle, VA. I just bought a vette there a few months ago. The prices are fair (not dirt cheap), and they take all the time you need. No high pressure tactics. I would never buy another vette without stopping there first. They were recommended by two of my friends.
Common Frank, neither of our cars were "bone stock" when we put up that damn time slip!
Bone stock the L98 will run about 14.0 and the LT1 will run about 13.5. If you ran two bone stock Vettes with A4s my money is on the L98 in the 1st 1/8mi and on the LT1 at the traps.
To help decide on which Vette to buy, I suggest you get a copy of the Corvette Black Book to see what features differed across the years of interest.
From a performance standpoint you can get either engine to power you into the low 12s and beyond. I believe it's cheaper to get there with the LT1 since you start at 300hp so you only need to add about 60-70hp; with the L98 you need to add about 125hp to get the job done.
In the final analysis, look at the total package and buy the Corvette that you realy like.
Well what ive found in my .02 is that if you have a L98 Vette it will cost you about 1/2 LESS what it would cost if the same prob went in an LT1, all parts are more expensive on the LT1 so if u can swing the cash if anything goes wrong, id get an LT1..I would have loved an LT1 6 Speed :D but couldnt afford one, so i got an 85 L98 Auto, and im not what so ever disapointed, ive hurt many of mustang boys feelings wit my Slow L98 wit minor FREE mods. Thus against nicly modified Stangs.

"Ive heard horror stories about the L98 and leaking oil i was about to buy a 90' and then I learned of this"

If thats your criteria, Ive got this 1989 Ford pichup truck with 124K miles and it doesn't drip a drop. :jester
Here's a link that shows the changes year by year. I'd get the newest one you can but there are major differences year by year and options you may "need" to have that may sway this. :flag
My '91 has over 190,000 miles and has never burned a drop of oil. It had a leaky sending unit once but that is about it. I am doing a rebuild now only because I blew a head gasket and figured I might as well go thru the whole engine. Hopefully, I can get another 190,000 miles out of it.
From my experience, the L98 better suits my driving style. I like the SOTP feel leaving a stop light. The LT1's I have driven seem to lack that thrill. My suggestion would be to test drive as many Corvettes as you can.
Performance wise it does take much to even out the L98 and the LT1, I doubt I have any where near 300hp but with the mods I have I can run with alot of stock LT1s
As mentioned earlier theirs more to a vette than just the engine, the newer you get the more things are tweeked. I would get the newest one you can get. That way your getting as many refinements as you can afford at the time. JMHO
You said you were looking at 90-96.......lets see...96 LT4 comes to mind. :D
Corvette Factory Food chain chart
1. LS6
2. LS1
2. LT4
3. LT1
4. L98
LS1 and the LT4 are to close to call sometimes...I have them even. :D
I've had my 95 LT1 for a year and a half now, only repairs so far were replaced battery and heater core. Don't let the Optispark scare you, I washed my engine once and drenched it, the car wouldn't run that night but by morning it was like nothing happened. With just a Corsa exhaust and K&N filter I am running 13.4s.
