When I scan with my AutoXray, The Average MPG number goes to 12.8 and freezes and the Range goes to Zero. I believe this data is sent to the dash Speed/Tach cluster from the ECM via the Serial Data line. Also when this occurs, on some occasions only, the Serial Data to the AutoXray stops responding. When I turn off the ignition for a few minutes and then restart with the AutoXray disconnected, I can push the reset button on the dash and MPG and RANGE return to normal.
I have checked the Serial Data Wire from the ECM to the ALDL and Cluster and there are no shorts, bare wires, etc.
Those dash readouts go goofy on me also when I hook up my scan tool. When I unplug the scan tool they go back to normal. I don't even bother to look at em.
I have asked Autoxray to have Engineering look into this to see if they can fix it. Definately a problem with their unit in accessing the '86 to '89 Vette through the Serial Data line since it is spliced just before the Digital Cluster and the splice goes down to the ALDL. The autoxray's query messes up the MPG computer in the cluster that is connected to the Serial Data line to receive info from the ECM to calculate the MPG. That's not as frustrating as the fact that it eventually locks the serial data line so the monitoring stops.
Len Mitchell, Tehcnical Support Manager at AutoXray Inc. has contacted me on this and is having their Engineering Dept. look at this problem. They were not aware of it and that it affected so many years (84-89).
