Thanks for looking...I am trying to replace my old cardboard header gaskets with some more permanent copper ones and I am finding difficulty getting the header bolt holes to line up properly with the holes in the head. They are only the smallest bit off but that makes it impossible to get the bolts started. I thought about letting the headers heat up and then maybe they will expand just enough to get the bolts started. I would really appreciate any best practices anyone may have. thanks
Are they still attached to the rest of your exhaust system on the bottom? If so take that loose and that will allow you to manipulate your header some. Also the Mr. Gasket Copper gaskets that I used had "ears" on the outside bolts that would allow you to get them in there easily. Basically you get the header in place somewhat and start the extreme outer bolts. Then you can slip the gasket behind it and tighten it up a little bit. This should pull it in place enough to get the other bolts started.
Helpful hint. I used a little bit of ARP assembly lube on the header bolts last time I put them in and it made life easier. They screwed in with a lot less resistance and it let me get them tighter with less effort. Months later none have backed out at all.
