89 Vette. Been having off and on issues with the starter clicking once per turn of the key. Sometimes I’d go days with it firing up first try, some days it would take 5 or more try’s, and now it won’t fire at all. Bought a new starter and I found what appears to be oil over half the starter, the wires and on the transmission lines. Where could all of this oil be coming from?
Well I got the starter out and it looks even worse behind it than the pictures I took.
I do have my new starter handy but it looks like it would be easier to drop the pan without the starter being there, what all needs to be removed to get the pan dropped?
Wipe everything down ans check again...it may be the valve cover gasket at the rear of the valve cover. Wipe behind there to see if you have leakage. That right side is a real bitch to remove and replace gasket. There is a detailed U-Tube on the subject.
Get under the car with a light and look above the starter for a trail of oil down to the starter.. Usually it's either the valve cover gasket , or the rear of the intake that leaks down onto the starter..Don't just replace the pan gasket without finding out whats really leaking... The pan gasket could be wet from oil leaking down from above...WW

Leave the starter out for now, and make sure you take out the oil level sensor from the driver side of the pan if there’s one there! On my LT1 I also removed the oil filter and the adapter, give you more room to work. If you have the blue fel-pro kit it comes with gaskets for the oil filter adapter.

His car is a 89 L98 , not a LT1, so there is no adapter or oil level sensor....WW
