I am fed up with my passenger side exhaust manifold. There is too much junk on that exhaust manifold. I was thinking of blocking off the EGR tube. Also maybe the A.I.R. too. That would make the manifold a lot easier to work with. When I get headers, there won't be anything to worry about either. I am a little worried though, will it throw a code/check engine light/or the car run bad if I block off EGR or the A.I.R. or both? Is there anything I need to know or any kit or something I could buy to make this job a lot easier? Anyone done this before what were your results and problems you might have come across? Do you get any power out of it? Im sure I have other questions and concerns, I just can't think of them right now, TIA
You won't get any additional power from the EGR blockoff, but the AIR elimination will likely free up some.
Some guys have blocked off the EGR with no problems and for others a code is thrown. I believe that if you have a low temp stat you won't get a code.
All you need is two block off plates for the EGR.
For the AIR you will need to block off the fittings at the exhaust manifolds, block off the AIR tube at the cat and buy an AIR pump replacement pulley kit.
Why do people block the EGR then? If I get aftermarket headers, like TPIS ceramic coated headers, would it have the A.I.R. and EGR connections? I have a 170* stat, so I hope it won't throw a code, but removing A.I.R. won't throw a code? Im not sure exactly what either do, and if its ok for my car to not have them? There is only one connection on the passenger side exhaust manifold for the EGR, but there are a lot of A.I.R. connections, also the line runs into the pump I guess thats what it is, next to the AC compressor. That would have to go and all the lines it connects to, and get a replacement kit and block of the EGR and everything will be fine? One last question, where can I get these kits/replacement pulleys and EGR block off plates? Thanks!
Re: Blocking off EGR? Removing A.I.R.? (Red91Vette)
Do you have to have all that "STUFF", to get by smog checks?????
If so, your stuck....but plenty of other mod's you can do to keep it legal....and stop getting ulcer's...worrying about it passing smog....of course thats really if you care about the smog check's.....in your local area/state....
Re: Blocking off EGR? Removing A.I.R.? (Red91Vette)
The TPIS LT headers come with the EGR & AIR connections as do some otheres. Of course you can get some setups without.
Once you've removed all the related tubing, blocked off the EGR, plugged the vacuum port and the cat port you only need to get the AIR compressor eliminator pulley & bracket kit.
MAD has these kits for $169.99, "for off road use ... only".
There must be EGR block off kits but I would just fab the parts from 1/8" steel plate.
The AIR is injected into the exhaust manifolds to help burn vapors and heat the O2 sensor during warmup, then into the cat to help lower emissions during normal operation; it's dumpped to the atmosphere at WOT.
The EGR feeds exhaust gasses to the intake to reduce combustion temps and so NOx. This function is off at WOT.
I think you're safe with that 170deg stat so expect no codes from either mod; however if coolant temps climb high enough in hot weather you could get an EGR code.
