I HAVE A DAILY DRIVEN 96 CONVERTIBLE THAT I JUST BROUGHT IN FOR ITS 9OK MI SERVICE. I ALSO ASKED THAT THEY CHECK MY SUSPENSION DUE TO A LITTLE SHAKE AT HIGH SPEEDS AND SINCE I NOTICED THAT THE STABILIZER TO CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS LOOKED WORN. I AM BEING TOLD THAT BOTH UPPER AND ONE LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEED REPLACEMENT FOR A COST OF $1600. I NEVER HEARD OF THIS. DO THE CONTROL ARMS WEAR? HAS ANYONE ELSE NEEDED TO REPLACE THESE?
At the mileage your car has it is possible that the ball joints are worn on your car. This could cause the high speed shake you describe. The dealer mechanics don't like the hassle of removing the A arms on replacing the ball joints. They prefer to replace the whole arm with a new one, which by the way GM sells as a unit. $1600 is abit to high for this job. I would suggest doing the job yourself if you have the mechanical ability or take it to a reputable suspension shop. The people on this forum will answer any question asked if they know the answer. Try and be a little more patient, you posted late yesterday and have an answer early this morning.
SINCE I NOTICED THAT THE STABILIZER TO CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS LOOKED WORN.
What happened to mine is that the bushing got so badly worn the metal sleve actually cut into the lower control arm. Replaced the lower control arm for $130 (used piece - in perfect condition). The 'factory' does not replace upper ball joints, they replace the entire control arm, not sure if this is the case on the lower as well (the lowers are pressed in and they should be able to do these).
Buy the ball joints yourself and replace them, should cost you less than $100.
Thanks for the help guys. Sorry if I came off as impatient. I just thought that my post would get lost at the bottom and go unnoticed. And I didn't know that the all capital letter deal was frowned upon 'round here.
Now the shop is telling me that the upper arms themselves are ok but they need ball joints and they can do just that which makes a lot more sense for about $139 / side. But they say the stabilizer mounting hole in the lower one has worn too big to hold the bushing and it should be replaced, and it would be 4 hours labor. Does that sound like a fair amount of hours?
Thanks again.

Yep thats what happened to mine. Fours hours sounds a little steep. Where are they getting the lower control arm from ? If its used, make sure to replace the lower ball joint and bushings. Whos doing the work for you ?
