Probably. I just removed mine.
I don't know if I have seen any D44 batwing without them, but my original D36 did not have them. Newer D36 also had them.

great! Thank you! I am installing studs on the diff and they are giving me trouble. Much easier to install without the blocks.

An M10-1.5 HFH (hex/flange head) 'prevailing torque' might have been a legitimate alternative for nuts. Appears to be nearly complete!!

I've never seen an "official" description or reason for those pieces. I've always just assumed they were some extra mass points for some vibration/resonance dampening. If someone knows the true reason for implementing those parts, I'd appreciate the information. FWIW, I've deleted them on my cars for convenience of maintenance, and haven't noticed any down side to that.
