Default LTCC harness does not fit LS1 coils

I'm reinstalling LTCC kit in my 93. I sold my old coil packs to a friend that needed them, and bought a new set. I'm noticing the wires in the LTCC harness have a different plug. The coils part number is 12558948, which matches the spec here http://www.bailey-eng.com/LTCC.html

What is my best option to make these work? Do I need a new harness, or some kind of adapter?

Need more info. How old is your LTCC harness? Is it the one with individual connectors for each coil? Or a pair of connectors that connects to two separate coil harnesses (1 for each bank)?

….. My "850" LS1 coils have the same receptacle as yours … but I have a set of heat sink truck coils that match your harness connector … these are dwell sensitive but might be an easier fix …..

I emailed Bob Bailey and he replied looks like my harness was built for "LS2" style coils.

My options are to either source different coils, or change the harness connectors to "LS1" style.

Bob did mention the metal fin coils are problematic with LTCC.

That's because, as above, the way they deal with dwell limiting is by firing, which means you could potentially have a spark event at a really, really unfortunate point. You could blow up your motor if you use one of those coils.

This isn't an insurmountable issue, but it would require a redesign of the LTCC's logic to account for the difference in dwell limiting performance.

Thanks for sharing the dwell concerns!

I found cheap coil wire connectors on eBay and will be changing ends to make LS1 coils I have on hand work.

Came across some anecdotal evidence LS1 coils output slightly more energy (30.5 mJ) than LS2 coils (29.3 mJ). Likely not a difference maker in my case. The Interweb consensus seems to be the IGN1A coils used by Mercury Marine are the mother of all coils (102.7 mJ). I'm not a forced induction setup so makes no sense for me, but learned more about coils than I ever really wanted to know.

Glad you're getting it sorted! To be specific, it's the "D585" coils that exhibit the dwell-limit-by-firing behavior. Part number 10457730, stamped 19005218. They do have a finned metal heat sink on them.

There is data available for the igniter current (current required to fire the coil) and dwell time available for a wide variety of these similar coils, though as of yet I don't believe there's been testing of actual spark energy by the same folks who tested for the igniter current and dwell data. As you stated, if you're not going forced induction, any of these coils should be able to handle your motor without any issues.

Best of luck, let us know how the adapters go!
