Have to ask, could it be the full synthetic AC Delco Dex 6 fluid I’m using? My understanding is that the dex6 is the replacement for dex3. I’m sure this is not the issue, but just wondering.

Having read the service manual for the '95 4L60E (which is the same as the '96), I hate to say it, but it sounds like your reverse input clutch is done. It's the one thing that only affects reverse and doesn't affect any other gear in any way. It's also pointed out in the images from the service manual I posted earlier.

It would behoove you to find a reputable transmission shop and have them inspect and repair it. Don't bother with chains like AAMCO or whatever. These turbo-hydramatic transmissions have been around since the stone ages, so there are plenty of guys who've been doing independent repair for decades who know them inside and out and don't charge an arm and a leg. You'll get better quality of work and save money at the same time.

Best of luck.

Thank you. At this point, this seems above my level of expertise. I’ve got a local shop that a lot of car guys seem to respect. I’ll head over there this week.

Taking the valve body isnt hard. Its a bit messy, but if on a lift, life is easier, than on the garage floor on your back.
If someone can do a pressure check, which is easy BTW, then that will tell you quite a bit.
As far as fluid, I used what GM recommended always for my 700R4/4L60/E's

I agree with what your saying, but that valve is in the valve body.. He has to take the pan off to get to it. If the pressure test shows its not being boosted, it has to be taken out, correct?

I dont know what happened, but an entire post from Ihatebarkingdogs was erased at 115pm?
He was talking about the reverse abuse valve is the only valve associated with this if pressure isnt being boosted, of which a pressure test may show.
Anyways, it was great knowledge, dont know why it was taken off.

There are lots of videos on YouTube on the 4L60. I like the video by Precision Transmissions.

Thanks ZWILD, great video. There's a man who knows what he's doing. I, however, don't have a clue. In hindsight, I should have stuck with manuals that I'm used to. Not only is my left foot bored, but now my wallet will get significantly lighter.

Starting to have some second thoughts here. Bought a 24 yr old car that sat and sat, only 45k miles in 24 yrs. My plan was to drive it as long as there's no salt on the ground, so maybe 8 months out of the year. Now I'm thinking what other brittle seal or part will go to **** next? Not interested, nor have the time for rear mains, head gaskets, etc. Maybe fix the trans, tuck my tail between my legs and sell this thing. Take the loss now as opposed to death by a thousand cuts. Not sure yet, but not a good way to think only a month into ownership.

Don’t get discouraged. Get the trans sorted and run it. They’re great drivers. I run mine all year except when the roads are salted.

My 93 has 154000 miles. But, it does sit for many months on end.. When it gets driven something always breaks. Its because it doesnt get driven, and it is modified slightly, lol...
But, a good transmission shop , an honest one, should be able to get you an idea of the problem.
Since I have pulled this transmission out times, 4L60, and done the valve body for different shift kits, till this last one was completely built right.
Its not hard, and its messy, but, if you a driver, let the fluid drip for a couple days, into a pan, then take the valve body off, and get it repaired or put another one in and sell the old one.

Thanks guys. I’ll get it rebuilt, then figure out what to do afterwards.
