Default Trans issues....ALREADY ??????

I recently purchased a Yank Sportsman Pro transmission since mine blew up after installing the converter. I picked the car up on thursday morning, and by friday night, had the 200 miles break-in on the car. Decided to go a little longer before doing any WOT testing so saturday night, it had 400 miles. I had a chance to test from a stop numerous times and, with 315 tires, has no traction in first at anything more than half throttle. The 1-2 shift is crisp and precise. I then decided to go to my local 1/4 mile test strip and do a full pass to see how it did. This time, I drove better and got traction in first, 1-2 shift came crisp and firm, pulled strong through 2nd, 5700 on the tach, what should have been the 2-3 shift resulted in the tach showing I guess almost 6500 (WAY to the right) and the tach is swinging back and forth like a pendulum. I let up, baffled in thought, and try it again. Same thing occurs so I decide no more testing and to call Yank on Monday morning to see whats going on. Well, this morning I decided to try a 3/4 throttle test while merging onto the highway and, sure enough, the trans shifts! And it shifts GOOD!! Now I am really puzzled. So, I pull off onto the side of the road, do a WOT run with my foot about an inch or so off the floor and the 1-2, 2-3 shifts happen flawlessly. Again, I pull off to the side of the road, do a WOT run and 1-2 happens perfectly, 2-3 wont shift. Huh....

Today I call down to Yank, tell them the problem, and see what happens. If anyone else has the same problem, let me know, as it may be something simple.

Also, the fluid is a pinkish color, smells sweet, not burnt at all. Trans temps are 190-205 after driving all day.

To be honest, I have never adjusted that cable. I thought the shop would have taken care of that for me, but will check on it tonight.

Thanks!

Just got off the phone with Yank. Here are the details of what I was told:

Use conventional oil, not synthetic convential was used
Lower shift points already lowered 2mph, will lower further saturday
Change fluid but not filter waiting to see if above works first

I was also told that its not a mechanical issue but more of a timing issue with the computer.

That does make me feel better but I will feel MUCH better when it actually works the way I want!

I agree.

Lower your shift points and you will be fine.
What kind of programmer do you have?

If its a Hyperteck, each number you lower equals 100 rpm on the 2-3 shift I think

Hey Phil, I dont have a programmer. I use LT1-Edit and lowered my shift points down previously to make up for the bad trans by 2mph, guess I need to lower the 2-3 another 2mph.

I also have a 2800 stall Vigilante. I'm having a problem with mine as well but not with the shifts. My 94 has developed a rough idle and occasionally will stall. I'm thiking about getting LT1 edit and hoping raising the idle speed a little will help eliminate this problem. I know someone else who recently put a 2800 PI in his 96 TA and had the same problem, he eliminated it by rasing the idle speed and adjusting the IAC counts.
There are plenty of guys with 4L60E's running this converter, I have a tendency to believe your problem, like mine must be programming related.

Have you tried contacting Precision about your problem ? Maybe they have some suggestions. I've been lazy but I should call them also.
good luck.

Hey,
Your problem sounds scarily similar to mine...except my tanny is 86000 miles old (18 years). i have the exact smae simptom as you are describing. Excpet i hear a clunk when i let off the gas when my tach spikes. It only happens at WOT. Its very odd. Any ideas?? (TV cable what is it????)

Thy these 2 simple steps then test again.
1)With the car running disconnect the tv cable from your linkage and pop it a few times. What I mean by that is pull it out all the way using your hand and let it pop back in. The will increase the fluid presure in your unit and possibly flush out and trash thats in that vavle.
2)Now its time to adjust the cable. Push in the metal tab all the way and move the cable back in as far as it will go. Now holding the tab in with the tv cable connected open your throttle all the way. You will see it come out automatically. Let go of the metal tab. Go test it. Remember this, just in case take a rough measurement of how much it moves from where it is set now, just in case you want to put it back in the same position. Once adjusting the tv cable, if you dont like where it shifts, just move it in or out according where you want it to shift. Make it shorter for an later shift, and longer for a earlier shift.

Problem has been solved.

Turned out to be a cracked transmission filter. Per Yank's request, had the fluid and filter changed. I drove @ 50 miles on the new fluid, went out on the highway and let er rip! 1-2 shift was firm, 2-3 shift hit the limiter for a second and then went into gear!!! :D I was literally bouncing out of my seat when it happened so I slowed down to 60 and hit it again, same thing.

NOW I need to adjust my shift points as the trans is actually shifting now!! Cant wait til friday when I go to MIR and see what kind of times I can lay down! :reddevil

Stock tuning with 307 gears is 133. I have mine turned down to 130.

-Mike

Stock tuning
1-2 @ 41
2-3 @ 77
3-4 @ 133

My tuning
1-2 @ 39
2-3 @ 75
3-4 @ 130
