I don't believe the shifter has any shims in it. It is not like an old 4spd shifter. You can get to it from underneath the car and you have to remove the rubber boot. There is nothing easy about getting the shifter out. If you refer to ZFDOC.COM he has the instructions for removing the shifter.
It does have some shims. Two real thin squares of metal at the pivot points. If I remember correctly, you might be able to get to them from the interior. I did mine when trans was out of car, but after re-installing trans, but before re-installing leather shifter boot, could still get at the shifterworks. I have some leftover shims from my Hurst shifter kit, if need some, just give a holler.
Hey 89 Paul in Cal, thanks for the offer for the shims. What would you want for them? I'm getting a new console plate w/shifter boot for Christmas & I plan to look into the loose shifter situation while I'm in there, so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have the shims in hand in case that's the problem.
Will I need to remove more than just the shifter plate & boot or will that be enough to see what's going on?
you are right, you can access it from the top of the car with some care. When I started my Hurst I found out the hard way that I still had to move the exhaust to get it in.......for just the shim part of the equation, yes you can do it from the top.....I found minimal play with the factory shims in place if you plan to stay with the zf shims. Just make sure you have tie wraps big enough to reseal the lower boot assembly, unless your smart enough to GENTLY pry the original out with a small screw driver and reslide it back over when your done....... ;)
