Chalking tires has been around at least since the 60's when I first saw it being used. Thing is, most vehicles have a 'range' on air pressure depending on how it's configured and loaded. This helps IMO narrow down to the correct pressure for how a car is set up. It's not IMO the absolute answer but it will help you narrow it down to what should work best for you.
