I am looking at a 1985 coupe manual shift. Body and interior nice. Owner took it through a car wash left and heard a popping noise. Thought it was from car wash . Parked the car for a couple days started car and popping is still present. I'm thinking plug wire , coil? hoping to hear from collective maybe inexpensive fix but maybe something like broken valve spring?
Owner also states has a lifter ticking.
I'm going to look at the car tomorrow and was hoping to hear what steps or things to check to try and focus and narrow down the problem.

don't think there's much on a 85 that would be affected by a car wash.....check the bay at night for sparking.....other c4's had "opti sparks which could be affected by water....
I would pull the distributor cap and check for moisture, then blow it out with compressed air. Double check all sparkplug wires to ensure they are on all the way.
The car wash could just be a coincidence if the lifter let go at that moment. ???
Good luck.
Couple things
1. intake valve hanging open if valves were improperly adjusted.
2. Exhaust smog pump check AIR valve failed , it’s possible he didnt let it sit and cool down enough before Blasting the engine.
3. Or he was changing plugs because one fouls out all the time and got the plug wires in the wrong spot!
4. he hosed the engine when hot and cracked the dist. Cap and its firing 2 cylinders at the same time

It's a valve. Run the car and remove and replace plug wires until you find the cylinder that is popping. Pull the valve cover, put a 5/8 wrench on the damper pulley nut and slowly rotate the engine. Chances are one of the valves will not open. That means the cam is wiped or collapsed lifter, broken push rod, broken rocker arm. Good luck.
