I'm pretty sure it's toast but I'm going to ask anyway. The automatic transmission, RPO-MD8 in my 85 Z51 will only pull in 3 and OD at very high rpm. 1 and 2 pull normal. Checked fluid level and T.V. cable adjustment per the FSM and everything appears ok. Anything else I should check before calling the salvage yard?

Probably only thing left to check is if you have all the tools needed for a rebuild or a transplant. 3-4 pack is toast.
If you shopping 89-93 should ensure all basic updated parts are present. It took several years before the 700r4 became reliable. There was a constant stream of improvements until 88-89 There are corvette specific parts along with C4 unique extension housing which can be transferred. Output shaft is shorter it can be trimmed. The speedometer gear is in a different location so it may need repositioned.
So on a whim I looked up trans repair in my area. Called a place that advertised 30 years experience so I figured they must have worked on a few C4's. Sure enough the person that answered knew all about C4's, claimed to have owned and worked on many. Said all the right things about Corvette specific parts, updates and what not. Remove, rebuild with all updates, reinstall just under $1800 with one year warranty. I mentioned I was considering selling it and he said he may be interested. I told him I had probably over $10,000 (yes that much) in this car. I told him $3000. Sent him pictures and said that I had been thinking about it and with his experience and the price I may just have him rebuild it. He text back and said that would be great too.
So what I'm getting at is that this car has been an roller coaster ride and a money pit for the last year and a half. I'm was more than ready to give it up until getting this information. I daily drive this and for the most part everything works, cruise, a/c etc. I also drive this on road courses and the drag strip. I have another 85 I show and use for road trips. Not sure what I'm saying or asking. I guess it goes back to if you don't sell it you can't lose any money.
IDK 30 cents on the dollar is hard to swallow. Not atleast being a driver really knocks down the value. There is a point where you have to decide.if the unreliable car is worth your sanity. 1800 sounds in the ball park, it does depend.on labor rates in your area.
