Someone is selling an ADS Super Chip for a 1986 Corvette L98 manual new in the box for $100 plus shipping. However, I have a 89 auto. 1 Will the 86 chip will work on my 89 auto, 2 is $100 a fair price, and 3 what kind of performance enhancement can I expect.
Below is part of the guy’s reply to my PM.
Thanks in advance!
The box says 1986 and does not list any others years. I would assume that it would work for all L98 engines, but I do not know for sure.
The only other info on the chip and box is the number 8623-B. Otherwise it only states: 1986 Corvette 350 TPI Manual.
It will physically fit and run your car. I have an ADS Superchip in my '86L and it manages pretty well with too much cam, no cold-start injector, and not enough gear (yet). All that said, it is pretty well established that the '89 stock programming is the best of the MAF TPI cars. Your car has no cold-start injector and the '86 chip will not have the cold start enrichment you need without it. It will be very cold natured and crabby when you start it up, mine is. What are your mod's and how does it run now? This isn't a negative statement about ADS. I also have an '87 Hypertech chip that doesn't manage the idle speed very well coasting to a stoplight. Long post to say i don't have a stock chip, but if i did, i would want an '89.

Thanks sir. I should have said in my OP that the car is unmolested. Bone stock. Needs an exhaust because the original is rusting out and would like an upgrade but I’d also be fine with OEM.
It runs like it’s bone stock. I like it that way. It’s a cruiser, nothing more, nothing less.

You need a bone stock chip then. The only chip that will really help you is one that is done based off data logs of your car or with your car on a dyno. Hypertech and the like are snakeoil. Also as far as chips go, until you have done at least one real modification to the engine, one is not needed. Money is better spend elsewhere. Gears, Torque Converter, Headers... hell even an under drive pulley would help more than a hypertech chip.
do a search here to see how many will tell you those chips don't do anything...... Think the one I had in my 85 is still somewhere in the garage...useless

I have a Hypertech Power Chip for an '89 L98, Auto. W/OD, Non Calf. emissions. This chip will lower your fan ECM activation temps working with a lower 160*~ 180* thermostat to lower coolant temps significantly on a stock '89 L98 equipped vette. This chip was made specifically for a '89 L98 C4 Auto tranny, it appears to be exactly what your looking for.
Hypertech part # 128882 As far as performance gains I wouldn't expect much if you remain bone stock, but I found it worth it to significantly keep the engine oil and coolant temps down. As mentioned above it tweeks timing and main fan settings. Great for hot summer days running the A/C full blast prevents heat soak of engine oil and engine compartment. Does your '89 have an OEM auxiliary fan? I ran it with headers and it performed well.
PM me if your interested!
