Default 96 fuel pressure test results SUCESS!!!

My 96 base has run great for the last three years. The last three times I have started it there was much more cranking than usual and ran rough for maybe 4 seconds. I did a search and read every post on checking fuel pressure and did not see anything like my results talked about. With key on I only get 26 pounds (should be 45). I tried pulling out the key and turning to on many times but it just stays at 26. When started it jumps up to 38 (should be 40 but close). With the regulator unplugged it jumps to 44 (should be 45 but almost fine). What does the 26 with the key on tell you experts? Fuel pump has never been changed. Also, after turning off it does not leak down very fast at all. Thanks very much!!! Dan

I believe that the first time in a long time that you turn the key on, it will prime. In your case, it doesn't get past 26. The 2nd time and 3rd, etc time, it probably won't prime. Have you tried crimping off the return line and turn the key on for the first time in a while and see if the pressure works up to what it should be?

Thank you for taking the time to reply Aklim. I went out today and clamped the return line. I then turned the key on and it went to 24 pounds. I then unclamped the return line and bled the pressure and turned the key on again and got the exact same 24 pounds. What does this tell you sir? Thanks, Dan

I'd be checking fuel filters first, then voltage at the pump......IF both are good, change the pump would be my best guess.....

Thanks for your response. I bought the car 3 years ago with 27,000 miles. I changed the fuel filter and have put 10k miles on it. I will change it again if I change the pump. I will check the voltage. I assume I pull the electrical connector and have my wife turn the key on while I have a multi meter hooked up. Dan

NO!!! you manage to check the voltage with the pump running under load....better get 13 something, assuming alt is fully operating.....

Supplied Voltage has nothing to do with load in this instance. It would be amperage that would go up with load.

Not running you should see close to battery voltage 12.2-12.6 range. Running you should see 13-13.5V. Either way is a valid test.

Your fuel filter is probably not the issue give its age, but they are cheap. I like the idea of replacing it with a new pump. I would give it a go before replacing the pump because it may fix it, it is cheap, and you are going to do it anyway.

Crimping the return line, while not explained above, basically isolates your Fuel Pressure Regulator being the issue because it regulates what is allowed to return to tank. By crimping this off and seeing the same result, your root cause is not the FPR.

How about leak down. With the line crimped, primed, and then how long does the system hold pressure? You may have a bad pulsator, check valve, or leaking injector. Before buying a pump, I would dig just a bit deeper.

If it holds at 24, I don't think it is the regulator or the injectors leaking. Could be not enough electrical power to the pump, bad pump or bad pulsator.

I want to thank everyone who responded and helped. I am going to change out the pump and filter. It means a lot to me that people will take the time to answer my questions. Dan

Don't forget to get a new tank gasket and pump sock.
Also, use a little PB Blaster on the tank bolts, you don't want to break off one on removal.

Put a new Delphi fuel pump and filter and it now goes right up to 44 PSI turning the key to on. It starts much easier. Thanks all!!! Dan

I only had 4 gallons left in the tank. I reached in and grabbed a piece of paper and a small plastic bag. The gas in there, the tray and the bottom of the tank looked very clean. I did do a new fuel filter. Dan
