Default Electrical issue stock 1987 auto

Yesterday I get in the car, turn the key on, car interior lights up and then everything goes immediately dark. Appears to be a blown fuse/cb issue. Nothing is working. So I start checking fuses and all seem to be ok, I drive over to my mechanic and we discuss what I should check such as the fuseable links and where they are located. Drive back to the car after about an hour and I start playing with the fuseable links by the battery, open the car door and the lights come back on.. Hey I got power so I get in the car, turn the key and everything goes black again. Take the key out and go back to the fuseable link post by the battery.. Start checking for loose wires, broken wires and notice that the negative post on the battery is warm. Keep on checking, go back to the negative post and now it's hot, really hot and getting hotter (key is still out of the ignition and in my pocket). I'm starting to panic, really don't want an electrical car fire in the attached garage, I use my quick disconnect and disconnect the battery and wait. After about 10 minutes the terminal is cooling down. A sigh of relief. I get the car towed to the mechanic, where it currently sits.

While it's sitting I thought I'd ask you guys for any thoughts, recommendations, has it happened to you? Scared the s... out of me.Thanks for your help.

Default Battery

Definitely the battery.
you hav an internal open that turned ugly.
batteries are put together inside with cell connectors that are lead.
lead is a soft metal.
Lead is easily disturbed with vibration and “ pothole” shock on bumps, dips.
under Electrical load, the weak place can arc, causing the fumes inside a battery to explode.
happened to me when i was removing a battery in my Z/28.
luckily i wear glasses, and i ran to the hose, washed my face and arms, then sprayed everything under the hood.
all i lost was a battery, and my clothes.
only stung for a few seconds.
you are lucky.

I kept the battery on a maintainer, could a bad maintainer cause the issue?

It was a bad terminal connection on the positive side of the battery
