Can't retrieve code from computer using OBD2 scanner.
I was told that my '95 has an OBD1 computer and a OBD2 scanner for retrieving trouble codes.
Is this why I cannot retrieve any trouble codes?
If so how do I get around it?

I don't know if an OBD II scanner will work on OBD I. Someone will probably come up with the answer. In the mean time ground pin #4 to # 12, turn ignition "on" & see if you get a display in the speedo.

I believe that the correct answer is that the 95's have OBD-I computers, but an OBD-II connector. Hence, the OBD-II specific scanner will not work. You need an OBD-I scanner with an OBD-II connector adaptor. Or the jumper/paperclip trick.

First of all, look under the hood on the radiator shroud for your emissions sticker, on the top or bottom in small print it should say OBD I or OBD II do this to make sure which one it is. My 94 is OBD I with the OBD II connector. If this is the case with yours too then here is the solution. Go to the Actron website and click on Sunpro, You will need to purchase code scanner CP9110 GM cartridge CP9111 and OBD II cable CP9115 . These are just what I purchased and it works nicely. Not only can you check for codes but also read data on sensors, engine functions, etc. Total package is about $ 270 plus shipping and tax but trust me it is well worth it. Most part stores do not sell the right equipment to diagnose these because of the OBD I computer with OBD II connector. Hope this helps you, It took me a little searching to figure out this whole mess. :chevy :seeya

Gr94c4 is correct. The final authority is always the vehicle emissions sticker. Almost all of the 94s and 95s had OBD2 connectors but were OBD1 systems. The two system types are not compatible.

As gr94c4 indicates- you need the proper cable. the 94 and 95 are obdI and require a custom cable. my auto xray comes with a standard obdII cable $200 and you get zero data using it. The GM specific cable works great , $35

Not sure what happens to some 95's. While at Carlisle, Gordon Killebrew couldn't get one of his 16 pin plugs to work. Had my Snap On scanner there and it pulled the codes just fine. Not sure what happens, but doesn't seem unusual for 95's. Seems I read somewhere they did a production year change that year but traded my Corvette Computer book for a 90 Computer book. Seems like it was in a Service Technology book mentioning some anomaly with 95. Wish I could be more specific.
