I understand this is a well-worn topic, but wanted to confirm suggestions specifically for 84, just in case there are one-year-only issues, as there often is with 84's.
My starter is showing signs of going. Gets the click, but no rotation on many occasions. Would like to replace prior to failure. I want to remove and replace with a new high quality unit, then rebuild the original unit as time allows. Have heard new Remy 99635 is a good alternative. Open to other suggestions.
Hi Mate
Any high torque mini starter for SBC/BBC is what you want. They are easier to fit and work better than the original. Here is a link to the first one I found but any of them will work just fine just get one from eBay. I have one similar to this on my 84. The engine is just a 350, apart from the fuel injection it’s pretty standard. https://au.maxpeedingrods.com/produc...SABEgIqXfD_BwE

Thoughts?
Thank you.
Do you know what model you currently have? If it's the same NipponDenso-built one that is in the 1990, then I would say everything I've seen when I took mine apart suggests its actually pretty well-built and likely just the solenoid contacts have worn down. You might be able to just rebuild it by buying a new set of contacts and cleaning it up. I have a new thread about an "oddity" I found during the rebuild process, but I fully expect that I'll be able to put it back together and reinstall it this weekend and it will work well with a repair price tag of only $15.
336-1054 is what I used on mine. Just have to extend the cable about 6 inches. I used a solder crimp and heat shrink. If you're in jersey you can have my old starter. I think it's too heavy otherwise to ship lol. The factory 84 starter is the old type heavy duty straight drive starter. Both kicked it over just fine I just needed the space with headers. It was rebuilt by the PO as indicated by the Napa sticker.
As a follow-up, I read in another thread some positive things about DB electronics starters. Seem to be quality, all-new, made in USA starters. They've got a traditional version as came with 84's, and then a gear reduction version which came on 88-91's. It's not a huge investment, under $90 incl shipping. Im leaning in this direction. Any opinions or experience with this company?

Get the geared version, smaller, lighter, easier to install, more room for headers later, more torque (potentially), etc, etc.
