I had a thought in regards to the valve cover on the passenger side. I've looked and cant seem to figure out how to get the passenger side cover off with the egr pipe going over it. Bad design Chevy. Anyway I was wondering if it would be possible to get the old gasket out, Mine is practically falling out right now and then splitting the new gasket at the top middle of the valve cover. Since the split is at the top I thought it would have less of a tendency to leak. You could also use a slightly heavier amount of gasket sealer to prevent leaking. My passenger side cover is most likely the original gasket with over 100,000 miles on it and I cant tighten the nuts down anymore to stop leaks. Has anyone tried this? If not is there an easy way to remove that egr pipe. As always thanks forum.
What year car?
in 85-86, the pipe is crimped on at exhaust.
87 up, the pipe is 2 piece.
there is a possibility to pry off Your pipe from the exhaust, replace your gasket, buy a new crimp, and recrimp the pipe back on. If you are careful, you can tweak the crimp clamp with a screwdriver at the crimp, and twist it off. Then open the crimp a little to slip it back on, and recrimp it gently with wire cutters.
i bought the crimpers From snap-on, and they are around $60.
try harbor freight for the tool, and NAPA for the crimp clamp.
the real answer is to buy an 89 up rh exhaust manifold with the newer style two piece Egr pipe.
but!
if you destroy your old egr pipe,
i have my original one for $40+ $10 For shipping.
its an 86.

On my '88 it was necessary to remove the EGR tube before removing the valve cover.
I sprayed lots of penetrant before tackling the bolts on the manifold.
You will need remove the VC in order to gasket it properly, IMO.
