My mate's Corvette C4 again - it has recently started to make a noise after the engine is shut off. When the key is turned off, the engine ceases to fire and as it slows to a stop there is a light rattling/whirring noise. I'm wondering if it could be some wear in a pre-engaged starter, or similar? Anyone else had this?
I get a strange knocking noise when I shut my car down after a long drive. It's done it since day one so I never pay any attention to it. These car's are a little weird that way.
Thanks for the thoughts - it's quite a 'superficial' noise, nothing inside the block, I'm sure of that. It's further back than the fans and it's a new noise, not there for the last 12 years. The car doesn't get much use so I'm thinking it may be the starter - are these pre-engaged? Or do they have a throw-in Bendix?
Double check your cooling fans as the fan could be starting to have bearing issues, and they do like to spin down after shutdown and make more noise when wearing out.
Is the noise coming from the area around the serpentine belt, specifically the tensioner Pulley? Mine made some strange sounds before giving out completely.
I have seen branches stuck near the fans make new noises, you can pick something up easily.
