My 91 has a flomaster exhaust with a crossover pipe, sounds real nice when you get on it. The problem is the exhaust resonates in the car at lower rpms. There is a loud droning noise generated inside the car while driving around town. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any fix other than remove flomasters? The Bose system helps alot :D but I'm looking for another solution.
thanks :seeya
Had Flowmasters on my 97 Tahoe and after 2 Yrs the drone finally got to me. I had them removed at my shop and replaced with Magnaflows. Unfortunately I feel the only remedy is to use a "bullet" muffler or switch to another brand of muffler. :seeya
The problem seems to come from the flowmaster 40 series mufflers more than the flowmaster cat-back system. It happens on Mustangs too, it's just the flowmaster droan RPM. The ones that don't have the droan don't sound as good from the outside.
Just ditch the bose and install something that you can turn up enough to drown out the exhaust :)
I have flowmaster 40 series mufflers on my car and it does have killer drone at around 1500-2000rpm. I shift around it. I don't really know what my car sounds like from the outside, but people tell me its pretty damn loud.
I had Flowmaster 40 series mufflers with the new style Deltaflow design that was supposed to cut interior resonance, but it was still too much for me.
Unfortunately, you can't go to a 50 or 60 series because they are too long.
As much as I hated to, I changed to what is known as a Vortex muffler, and I still get some interior resonance, but only about half as loud as the Flowmasters. Power seems to be the same. The other thing I had done was to have a crossover pipe installed in front of the mufflers right after the pipes start to split apart from each other. I think that also helps. Good luck!!!

I know it has a really loud idle...
I was thinking of getting a pair of "Flowmasters" for my '92, the 40-series Two-Chamber. Can anyone tell me the correct offset? 3" center in/out, offset in/center out, etc, etc, etc. I think I might like a little drone, for awhile anyway. I'm really tired of these stock muffs........
Thanks, Eddie
i have the crossover pipe in the same location right after the split. Guess i'll have to live with them for now. They were only put on 6 months ago and they do sound real good @ WOT
thanks for the advice on the vortex mufflers I might try that later.
I got Dynomax, super turbo's and rear y with cross tube delivered today...they'll be getting installed tomorrow. I'll let you know initial response tomorrow.
Anyone try to run 2 different size flowmasters on their vette? Maybe a 2 chamber on one side and a 3 chamber on the other? It seems that if you change the tone coming from one of the mufflers a little you wont get the resonating effect of the 2 tailpipes singing together at the low rpm. Maybe a small pre-muffler on just one of the tailpipes could help too. Not sure where it would fit though.
