Default Replace water pump with Opti upgrade?

According to my CarFax, the opti on my 1993 base model was replaced 2 years (2100 miles) ago. I can see it is an unvented (stock) unit. I'm seriously considering upgrading with a Petrix vent kit (cap and rotor). The carfax states the ignition, drive belts, and serpentine belts were replaced, but nothing is said about the water pump. Car has 53K on it--do I need a new pump (or was it probably replaced and just not noted)?

Either way, I need new gaskets, but do I need a new water pump seal ( https://petrisenterprises.com/collec...ump-drive-seal )

Thanks

Ronn

if it an OEM original water pump thats not leaking / its prob better than any aftermarket made in china but comes in an ac delco box, than you can get

id maybe do the weephole mod to it, but if its not broke dont fix it 🤷🏻‍♂️

that said, if someone threw a $69 optispark in there....i could see your concern you dont want to be stranded somewhere

note than even the petris units dont use the mitsubishi optical sensor. Id grill Jim Petris on his optispark sensors and if he is confident they hold up the same

its my experience nothing holds up the same as the mitsubishi optical sensor (in the heat, underhood environment)

dizWiz-- I hear ya on Detsubishilco part vs unknown. If it seems good on inspection, I'll not replace it.

Re: the opti; All the logs I have for the car indicate he always took it to the dealership. So I'm gonna assume when they replace the Opti, they used a Delco or Delco approved part. So my only goal woth the Petris unti is to replace the cap and rotor with a vented one. I'm NOT replacing the actual distributor unit (that I believe has the actual optical pickups in it.)

Radiator shrowd was NOT as simple as some posts have lead me to believe--but twisting and turning its out. Fan carriers then radiator then off comes the pump.

Thanks for your input!

I don't think GM has had an OEM opti in the parts system for sometime. Not to say that there can't be one lying around somewhere. I just wouldn't assume a dealer used an OEM opti.

What does the cap look like?

Obviously, I've little idea what an orgonal would look like, but this is what's in there...

The inside of the cap looks great--clearly only 2100 miles on it (probably being over cautious in pulling it). You can see there was indeed a vent tube out the bottom--but it wasn't hooked up. I can't find any part numbers on the unit, so now I assume its not OME. Does anyone know who makes these yellow cap'd opti's?

Rotor looks good too

good so far. The tan caps were back from when they made quality units

whats under that rotor?

underneath there you should find a reluctor wheel (hopefully clean)

then the sensor. It has a mitsubishi symbol - thats what you want to see

Well, now I'm back to thinking this is OME. Aside from the rotor screws being those annoying little torque head screws, which appear to be OME all over these distributors, the dis The optical base is a single, press-fit unit. There is no "cover" that-- as I have seen on many videos--pops off to reveal the internals (thus I can't look for that prized Mitsubishi emblem). There's no way I'm gonna start prying on this thing. Everything so far looks great--so when the new rotor comes, I'll just button it up from here.

Then the dreaded plug and wire change. I'm already just perplexed by #8...
