Default Transmission Question

I have a 1986 4 plus 3 manual shift. It requires you pull-up a lever on the shifter in order to put it in reverse. I was doing that, heard a click and then could not get it in reverse. However, I am able to drive forward and go through the gears okay. I am wondering if anyone experienced something similar and if this is just a connection of the shifter or whether it is a bigger transmission issue.
Thanks

Time to dig into the shifter. Here's a diagram from the SM:

There is a rod that is connected to the ring you lift to get over to reverse. This rod is an interlock to prevent inadvertent reverse selection. Could be the keeper fell of the rod. I believe there is a DIY here on how to remove the shifter ****. Pull the **** and remove the reverse interlock rod and see if you can get to reverse. Then you will know if its in the shifter or in the trans.

I found this procedure for the shifter in a Haynes manual:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Secure vehicle, transmission in neutral.

2. Remove driver's seat. (my note: you may be able to skip this if your issue is in the top of the shifter)

3. Remove shifter **** (for models with O/D button on the shifter (not on the console)...
a. Carefully pry the button out of the shift **** and then unscrew the T-rod.
b. COUNT the number of turns while removing T-rod to help with correct reinstallation.
c. Unscrew the shift ****, BE CAREFUL of the spring that is beneath the ****. :-)

4. Remove the console cover and the glove box lock.

5. Remove the left side panel of the the center console.

6. Remove the shifter cover...should be able to see the shifter components now.
