I need some help reinstalling the reverse shifter ring on my C4 six-speed. I pulled off the shift **** and reverse ring to install a new shifter boot. When I loosened the reverse ring set screw, the center reverse pin seemed to drop just a bit. I could then get the ring off. Now I am trying to reinstall the ring. Seems like to I need to pull the reverse pin up some small amount to be able to tighten the set screw. The reverse pin does appear to have an indent and inch and a half down the pin. Is it just trial and error trying to pull the center reverse pin up enough that the set screw will go in? Tried now for about and hour. Pulling the pin up with needle nose pliers and turning the set screw. I did pull the ring off, tightened the screw all the way, put the ring on, then slowly backed out the set screw until the ring went down. Still cant get the set screw to "bite" the reverse pin. Reverse ring is not stripped or split. Any ideas? What am I missing? This seemed like such a simple task.
So I figured it out. I bought this car used meaning when I see things in the car, I assume they are correct.
The leather shifter boot has a plastic ring that the shift rod goes through. The old leather was disconnected
from that ring and the ring had been jammed onto the rear shift ring. I thought that was the way it was
supposed to be. It is not. The leather boot ring needs to be tamped down around the shift rod or it won't
allow the rear shift ring to go all the way down and also the rear shift pin inside the rod. When I loosened
my set screw, the rear shift rod dropped a bit. I took off the boot, dropped the rear shift ring on, tightened
the set screw and all worked fine. That's when I realized the leather boot ring should NOT be attached
to the rear set ring. Hope this helps others.
