Other question...What is the difference between a vette 700 and others? I know the rear of it where it bolts to c-beam is different, but is that it?
When i had this tranny built i was a actually interested in a TCI, or Monster unit, but all said not for Corvette. So just curious what the difference is. I run a GPS speedo, and would still go with the valve body i have now.
I dumped at least 2k in this tranny so just looking at my options here. Thanks
Thanks....Im going to email the pics to TCI right now, then call them tomorrow and see what they think. After that ill send the pics to the guy who built it. But even if he says he will fix it i dont know if i trust him now. And i hate saying that as the guy has been doing it professionally for 35 years. But i understand, he never did a modification like this before. But still....Not too happy...
Any thoughts on the filter comment i made? Thanks
The "buzzing" sound you heard was probably the pump vanes running dry in the pump casing. Don't know if it would have damaged the pump or not. If the noise went away when you added more oil, that is your answer. Not sure how old your filter is but there is a notation in my ATSG update book that says a new filter and seal went into production on July 6, 1987. It is a bottom feed.

Yeah that noise was weird. And i could feel it in the lines. The extra oil solved it and i was hoping it didnt do damge.
And the filter was new when the tranny was built. It came with the TCI master overhaul kit so thats what he used.
I kinda skimmed over this, but as arbee stated the buzzing sounds like pump veins, especially when it went away with more oil.
Pan gunk looked okish for a fresh transmission...
Big thing that I'm looking at is the deep pan.
I assume you installed a filter with a longer neck to make use of the deeper pan?
Also, get a magnet in that pan!
I also recommend a pressure gauge.
start with line pressure, from there you can start pulling from different fluid paths.
And how is the tv cable set?
if wrong or too tight, things can get a little weird.
Not really no third weird unless things went really wonky...
Pan is stock depth. And no TV cable. And the drain plug does have a magnet on it albeit not a great one.....odd thing about the junk in the pan is how its only in the one spot.. But im going out there now to look at a few more things.
Below the 2-4 servo is a hole in the trans case. The moroso pan i have is flat and fhe gasket is notched like that hole drains? I searched any probs with this pan and saw none. Am i over thinking it? I dont have my original pan.

Monster builds a Vette transmission, I know because I had 2 of them go out. Both were in less than 10,000! The first one was fried because the filter dropped into the pan. One good hard run ended that one. The replacement never was right, it would not got into 3rd at wot from the first time I used it and I called Monster to see what they wanted me to do. The answer? "I don't know what is wrong but I'll find out", this was a tech man that said this. Nobody ever did contact me. I took it to a very reputable transmission shop to see if he would build it for me, He found out it was a Monster and told me he wouldn't even touch it, He said the last one he opened up went straight in the junk pile, he would not even attempt to figure out what they had done. FWIW I threw mine out for the junk guy to take. I bought a good used trans with only 57,000 miles on it, put a transgo kit in it and it is 10 times the tranny the Monster was,

On a stock pan, there should be a donut magnet thing on the bottom of the pan.
I usually add some high power smaller magnets in mine.
And as long as the pan fits, and doesn't leak it's probably fine.
The no tv cable comment has me wondering tho, this is a 700r4 and not a 4l60e right?
Tv cable handles pressure rise with the throttle on the 700r4, disconnected ans the trans wont last long.
1988 700r4. Was fully rebuilt and upgraded to handle the 383. Ultimate master rebuild kit (tci i believe), tci manual reverse pattern valve body, b&m 2600 stall converter, -6 an lines going to front mounted oil cooler (b&m i believe. Same one also for engine oil). Moroso deep pan. B&m mega shifter. Royal purple synthetic max atf fluid (put in 12 qts originally, with 1 going in torque converter as i installed it.). Torque converter is wired to only lock up in 4th, and it def is.
So the guy that built it is on vacation, and ill call him next week. He owns a major trans shop up here, and has been doing it for 35 years. I had him build the trans in nov 2017. When i got it back it was filled with fluid and ran on stands a few times until last year when i actually started to drive it 100 feet at a time. Just got plates in aug, so the car has 80 miles on it now.
Prob 1. Had a noise i couldnt find for a while. Best described as a buzzing sound. Thought was distributor or coil as it sounded electrical. Wasnt specific to rpm or anything. Just a buzzing sound here and there. When it did do it, i could see the trans lines "breathing" like it was on a ventilator. I could also feel the noise in the lines. Added fluid until it went away. Took 2 qts. Noise gone.
Prob 2. I have no 3rd gear. I shift it 1-2 no prob, and when i go to 3rd, there is a slight drag on engine, then goes into 4th. I havent lifted car yet to see if its just a linkage adjustment issue. But its def missing 3rd, and going to 4th. I did put my hand on linkage at tranny and nothing seems loose. Will lift car this weekend
i will be calling the guy next week but wanted to see if anyone that knows what they are doing to chime in.
So the assembly has 14 qts in it. I have no other issues at all with it. The deep pan (part #42025) says its 2.375" deep, and didnt call for a different pickup/filter. Is it possible the filter came off? Still low on fluid? Im at a loss. And id like to know before winter as i have to finish welding the exhaust. Im hoping i dont have to pull it back out.
Oh, and its a universal dipstick that was installed after i installed tranny. So thats my bad i didnt see how it extends into pan. Its a lockar unit. It does read on the stick, the fluid is clean and smells good, and not foamy. When i drive the car, the trans temp gauge takes a bit, then runs at 150 degrees. I have the sender installed in the pan.
Sent pics to TCI yesterday after i talked to them. 1st thing he said was because its from2017 they might not be able to do anything. I said its only got 80 miles on it and i can pretty much prove it. But he said hed look at pics. If i dont get an email by 3 today im gonna call again. I tried to search that VB to see the top side of it to see if in fact there is supposed to be a roll pin which i know there is. We shall see.....also btw i had 2 of these VB in Camaros in the 90s never had an issue. And i installed them. Only reason someone else did it is because he rebuilt the entire unit.

As I previously mentioned, the roll pins are inserted from the worm side of the VB. You can see the placement holes around the perimeter. These don't just fall out if installed correctly.
This has been fun. TCI finally looked at the pics. He said to just reinstall the valve and put the pin back in. I explained for the 3rd time there never WAS a pin. So he said just get one. So I said thats fine ill fix it but can you send me an exploded diagram of the unit. So he did. Literally the same one from my FSM. So I said this is not what I have can you send me one of THIS unit. The answer was, we don't have that info but its same as stock. The stock has springs where as this dosent......wtf. So I asked if I send it to you can you guys inspect it and fix it. Then it was oh yeah thats fine.....not thrilled here with support and I know TCI has a great reputation but apparently not for me.
So its getting sent to them. And I'm pulling the trannsmission to have the guy that built it go through it again after the VB comes back.. then ill have to hope its fixed as now its almost winter......

So here is the way I see your situation. There is no doubt in my mind that so long as no one has messed with it after you originally received the VB from TCI, then they indeed missed installing the roll pin(or the correct sized one). These are manufactured to cause an interference fit and they don't just fall out. That is why they are called a roll pin and not a nail. That being said, if you are a fair person, you will see their side of the story and accept a good portion of the fault. You say that this trans was put together three years ago. If you were going to take this long to get the show on the road, then it might have been in your best interest to leave these kind of things till close to the end. Also, if I am to assume that the problem occurred as soon as you drove it, then you shouldn't have continued to drive it for 80 miles. Your earlier description of the engine bogging when shifting to 3rd could indicate two gears trying to operate at the same time. I belief this is what is happening judging from the amount of clutch material in the pan. If the clutches have been hurt, TCI can't be held responsible for that. Every consumer item has a warranty life and companies have policies regarding this. In the case of a new car(and many other items), they have time and mileage stipulations. It don't matter if you buy a new vehicle and store it away for the next 20 years because you think that is going to be a retirement fund, after 3 years, the warranty is over, miles or no miles. I once had to get my truck towed to the dealership because I had a large warranty issue and I was that close to the mileage limit. Even after trying to explain my situation to the service manager, I was told that even 1 km. over the limit and I was SOOL. If this trans would have been installed closer to the use date and upon driving it the first time and recognizing a problem, dropping the pan would have indicated the same scenario that you are now showing us. I am very confident that by that scenario, TCI would have stepped up and rectified the problem with no questions asked. My advise is to move on from this and enjoy your ride once things get sorted out. Much like this fkn virus, things will get better.
I agree with you however there is a procedure to this project. Transmission had to get done when It did. It was filled with fluid and ran up to get everything oiled up. From there it was driven 100 feet at a time due to it not being on road yet. Everything seemed fine and it was. I had 3rd gear a few times.
That being said TCI screwed up hands down on the manufacturing. It was clear as day no pin was ever installed. Let them fix that issue. If the Transmission got screwed up thats on me. Didn't plan on going after them or any of that. Not worth it. Let them fix the VB and when I get it back the Transmission will be gone through and repaired if need be.
I am the service manager and head tech for a marina. Been doing this for over 25 years. And if I or one of my techs screwed up I rectify the situation without question. Only thing I don't work on (although now I've learned alot) is car Transmissions.
So as long as TCI fixes it im happy. IF Transmission is ok im happy. Either way ill be dreaming of driving it next year!
Oh and I put miles on it as TCI AND Transmission builder said to. They both said (when this issue showed up) that because its new something might just be sticking. So I did.. when it was obvious something was clearly wrong I stopped driving it.

From a personal standpoint, I totally agree with your viewpoint on customer service. Before I advanced to being an industrial superintendent, I operated two electrical contracting businesses for 28 years. I too would correct inadequate work by my employees, especially for repeat or long time customers. Only seems right. Unfortunately, most of the national or multinational firms today do not share this same philosophy.
