Have an oil leak in the area of the filter on my L98. I was under there today and can't really put my finger on the source. It appears to be above the the filter area. Is there a common culprit in that area? Not losing a lot just some drips on the floor. One thing I did notice was that after I changed oil and filter for the first time with 5w30 Mobil 1, the leak seemed to increase. Not sure what oil previous owner had in it but thinking maybe a heavier blend (just a guess). Thanks
The synthetic oils have many more detergents. They are better for sure, and I think the can clean out debris in a certain seal or sensor. My friend has a 90 and I have a 85 and we both had leaking from the oil pressure sensor behind the dizzy. My stalk was also loose so I put some rtv on it. Here is a pic of the area as it is under high oil pressure. We had smoke . Check Valve cover too as well as the oil cooler connection.
You can take off the cover for the wipers. Since I removed the distributor a few times now I will go that way. Removing the dist. isnt a big deal just mark where the rotor is pointing and use a long screwdriver to turn the oil pump back 1/4 of an inch and it will go right back. I learned this from the forum!
Usually if it's your sending unit, it'll make a mess all over the bell housing. And you'll be smoking. At least that's what went on when mine was leaking. Could even be a valve cover leak.
