Default AC Blend Door Rod

This may be a first, for the forum as I could not find anything in the search engine. OK, Readers Digest version, the rod that moves the blend door came loose and disconnected from the actual door. I cant see any way to get this rod reconnected to the door without dismantling the entire AC unit under the passenger side, which I have no idea how to do in the first place. Here's hoping that this has happened to someone else and there is a way to get this rod reconnected to the inside door without tearing the whole thing up. Plz let me know asap and as always thanks in advance. This is on a stock 1986 with the c68 (ugggg) electronic AC

With lot of patience and some long pliers you can do it by removing the blower motor resistor from the top of the airbox under the hood and reattach it through there. The plastic clip broke off on my 89, so I drilled out the end of the rod and used a small hitch clip to secure it.

Default Patience Indeed

Well thank you very much. It took me about 3 hours and multiple wounds on my head and hands to get that dirty rotten for flushing rod back in the hole. taking out the blower resistor helped a lot. Cant thank you enough. I ended up gluing a tapered dry wall plug, the kind you put a screw into and then it expands in the wall, onto the end of the rod. It worked great when i finally got it into the hole on the door. I bought a kit from Dorman that had several connector clips, with one that fit the motor arm hole precisely so I dont think I'll be making this repair again anytime soon. Thanks again...

Tony, any information on how to get the rod into the motor arm? My clip is broken on one side so the arm is still attached to the door but not the motor arm. I can just barely touch it from inside the car and can't even get the broken piece out. Also what doorman kit has a workable replacement piece? Mine is also an 86. any idea's welcomed.
Thanks

Sure thing, the kit is made by dorman, kit number 75450, you can get it at amazon for $4.78. Or you might be able to get it at your local Auto Zone.

Ok, so you probably have the big passenger side breadbox, my initial advice GET RID OF THAT THING, Unless you absolutely want to keep it original. You can buy yourself a panel that will replace that thing, and make your interior more streamlined. and easier to get to some of the under-dash components

So the first thing to do is lower the CPU out of the way. You do this by contorting yourself into some position that will allow you head to poke up into the passenger side foot-well. You'll need a 10 MM socket and a short extension. Remove the 2 bolts that hold the cpu up there

slide it out of the way. With that out of the way you should be able to see the motor actuator and the two bolts that hold it in place, I think there 7 MM.

GENTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! remove the rod from the motor arm clip, remember that that piece of plastic that holds the rod in place on the door is as old as the plastic piece on the control arm, so be careful. Once the rod is free from the control arm clip remove the 2 screws holding the motor in place and lower it down. If you have to disconnect the wiring do so to give you room to get the new clip in. I found the shorter of the two white clip worked best for the hole in the motor arm.

Ok, remount the motor with the new clip in place, turn the ignition just to on. Set your temp to to all the way cold or hot so the motor arm swings to the full position either way. If your motor arm swings towards the front of car make sure that you push the rod all the way forward to close the door then snap the rod into the new clip on the arm. On your head unit set the temp to the other direction and see that the motor arm moves and swings the door to the other side. Thats it! Put your hush panel back on and test your system.

C&S Corvette in Sarsota Florida does the replacement of both actuators in a day. Call them if you are close by.
