I have a 1987 Vette that is stock except for smog delete and free flowing dual exhaust, and an excellent tune up. It has been sitting for about 6 months, and now the fuel pump is bad. Here's the problem... I only need the car to run for a couple of months at most, then I am going to (finally), install my 450 horse 454 big block. (No lectures there please...)
So what fuel pump can I buy, that will run it for now, but still supply enough fuel for the big block later? It is of course, TPI right now. The big block will possibly be carbureted at first, (obviously with an appropriate fuel pressure regulator), but ultimately it will have FI Tech throttle body injection. Maybe even from the "git go" if I can swing it.
Way back several years ago when I first started researching this project, I ran across a blurb about a good replacement fuel pump that worked well for replacing a stock pump and had more flow than stock. It was quoted as being a quite commonly used good deal. I wrote the number down, but cannot find where!!! The car will be street only, even with the big block. And I need something economical because this whole project is going to add up quick as it is. So please don't suggest 300 dollar pumps, as that is more than I need and can afford. Yeah, yeah; I know... if ya can afford to play, then don't! :>)
Just an old half broke disabled ex-racer guy trying for one last hurrah here.
Have you posted in the C3 tech section? Those guys run a lot of big blocks in those older chrome bumper C3’s. I am sure many have been converted to TBI.
Racetronix has their own that can handle the fuel needed or you can also buy the Walbro 255 from them, which is what I run with in my 500 horse 398.
Personally not a fan of Racetronix. I've tuned SO many cars that wouldn't run right, come to find out they were using Racetronix pumps that would decide to not work when the fuel would warm up.
