You can take the head unit out, take the face plate off and replace the small bulb with one that you can get from Radio Shake. I think in the Tech Tips the proceedure for it is there?

while you're in there changing bulbs, you can color the bulbs with nailpolish to make it match the color of the other instruments. I just did this last weekend and it looks really nice. I changed all my instruments to blue backlit, except for the L.E.D displays.
Thanks fopr the suggestions. I'll pull the ehad and do it. Are the bulbs accessable from the outside or do I need to take something apart to get to them. Any chance I could damage something else?
It's a PITA to get to the bulbs. Pull H/U out, remove upper and lower metal trims that cover the top and bottom of the H/U. Then, you have to remove the buttons and *****, don't loose them! The faceplate is held on by integral plastic clips, be careful, mine broke. Then gently pull up on the faceplate to look for other integral plastic clips, I think there is one in the middle near the tone controls, I broke that one too :mad . The logic board for the tapedeck/cd had a circuit board screwed onto the faceplate, gently pry up on the faceplate after all clips have been removed and use a socket to unscrew the circuit board. be sure to not the orientation of the light pipe behind the circuit board, it will fall out as soon as the board is removed, along with the buttons for the tape/cd controls. Don't loose the buttons, very hard to find if you drop one, be carefull not to drop it into the tapedeck if so equipped. Lot's of disassembly to retrieve it if you do.
Those were the major hurdles I cleared last weekend. Good luck, it's way more involved than it should be. Took me about 2.5hrs to R&R, and replace bulbs.
