Re: 3rd Brake Light? Why wont it work.. (apollo30346)
The 3rd brake light has its own wire that leads back to the brake light switch. It's possible that the contact in the switch is bad. The switch is located above the brake pedal and attached to the steering column. On my 92, the wire is light blue in color. You should be able to check for voltage at the switch. Turn the ignition to ON and depress the brake pedal. If 12v is present, check for voltage again at the connection to the lamp housing. If 12v is present there, you may have a bad connector at the lamp housing or a bad ground wire connection. If no voltage is present at the switch, replace the switch.

The brake switch has 2 contacts, one for the lower brake lights and one for the upper brake light. One wire from the upper brake light goes to ground. Check both wires for low resistance (less than 1 ohm) to ground with the brake pedal NOT depressed. One wire must have low resistance to ground. the other wire has 12v on it when the brake is depressed. My bet is on a defective brake pedal switch.
