I decided to take a look at my check valves and glad that I did. I found a lot of black junk (carbon?) in both of them., A couple of questions: 1. What do they actually do. 2. Should I be able to blow throw them freely? I can blow through them with some effort. 3. Would it be okay to clean them with brake or carb cleaner?
I appreciate the response. One side is fairly easy to blow through, and the other is almost impossible. I might go ahead and replace them sometime this winter. They cleaned out pretty well.

No, it is a 1 way valve. You should NOT be able to blow into both sides or something is wrong.

I'm assuming "side" is referring to left or right bank of cylinders in this case.

IIRC, one side of the valve is barbed and that is not restricted. The hose goes to it and pumps air into the exhaust manifolds. The screwed end goes into the manifolds and should not let air back into the hose. This is on both sides
