I recently visited this forum as a guest and read about a hard start problem. Registered and took a couple of days before being approved. Now I cannot find the topic. I have a 87 Vette. Some times it will not even make a noise when you try to start it.(no crank/no click) Doesn't seem to make any difference whether it is 1st thing in the morning or after it has run for some time. If I let it set for 15 to 20 minutes, then it seems to always start. I have had the battery, ignition switch, and relay changed in three trips to the repair shop, but it is still doing the same thing. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Had this same problem on my 85. Turned out the positive wire that attaches to my starter was oily and dirty. I cleaned that and haven't had the problem since. I would try that as well as a vats test.
If you have a new ignition switch, we can eliminate the ign sw contacts that make with the pellet. First, try your spare ign key as its pellet contacts are not as worn as your everyday key. When it won't crank, you should hear the start enable relay click from behind the center of the dash. Next check the clutch safety switch. Jump the clutch switch the next time it won't crank. The starter solenoid gets power from the battery through a fusible link to the ign sw, through the VATS relay, through the clutch switch, then through the firewall connector then to the start solenoid bolt on the starter.
Also, I would remove both battery cables (neg first) and clean them and the battery terminals and replace (neg last).
If you want to check the new ign sw and your key pellet, find the 2 pin connector under the floor carpet coming from the steering column and unplug. With the key in the ign, measure the ohms of the wire from the column. It should be the same as the pellet. If over 10k, then the pellet is defective or the ign sw contacts are defective. You can clip a fixed resistor across the 2 pins on the wire going over to the passenger side (VATS module) the same value as the pellet resistance and you will defeat VATS and you should then get a crank. Don't leave this permanent because 99% of all thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ignition
