Default LT1 engine mounts

I’ve suspected an issue with mine, the car has felt ok under power, other than a clunk sound that I couldn’t pinpoint in the driveline when first applying a lot of torque... new or recent, u joints, suspension, brakes. I’ve had a really nice set of Prothane aluminum/poly mounts on the shelf for 6 months and today got to it.

Once I pulled the heat wrap off the mounts it revealed a failure of the drivers side mount. The fiberglass wrap was wet perhaps with oil though none had permeated through the foil and it really didn’t feel too oily.

Here you go, busted LT1 mount and a side by side with the new Prothane mount. They came out and went in easy. Along the way I discovered my drivers side cat guts completely disintegrated. Never heard a sound from it! Just wanted to share because so often when LT1 engine mounts are mentioned it seems to be questioned and posed that they don’t go bad.

I use them. But many here will balk at the cost. "A 50 dollar mount that will fail is a lot better than a 400 mount."

Yep, these were not inexpensive. I looked at them as a needed replacement and an improvement, I’m looking forward to the firmer feeling driveline. There was little (ok nothing) in between the cheapo aftermarkets made who knows where and these high end billet bad boys. Won’t need to do this job again.

I just installed them with new heat barriers on my LT5. Good choice and can't tell any difference in vibration . Not cheap but satisfied.

Can I ask why the heat wrap? I didn’t think it was necessary, is the poly at risk?

The LT5s have thick thermal barriers around the mounts, I am not sure if the LT1 does or not, I wanted the stock appearance and the LT5 headers are closer, I was worried about heat on the rubber base, the stock hydraulic mounts DEFINITELY needed the thermal insulation.

The LT1 engine mounts are exactly the same, including the thermal wrap. I've never used the wrap and no issues with heat on a race engine.

That's good to know. #1 I am keeping my ZR-1 stock looking and #2 glad there will be no heat issues.

How is the race engine used? 1/4 at a time or road race? I think the heat wrap for the stock mounts may be more beneficial for stuck in traffic, no airflow, right next to the cats protection.

Endurance road race. Most races are 6-10 hours. Only stoppage are pit stops.

Especially when the 50 dollar mount lasted 25 years, had untold amounts of full power blasts, also it's usually just the driver's side that goes. Replace it with a solid mount if you want, leave the stock rubber on the passenger side for noise vibration harshness reduction.. and go another 20 years for 50 bucks. Unless you are making well over 450 hp the stock mounts are more than adequate.

Problem is finding a quality OEM style replacement...... They all seem to be junk.
