Thanks 96GS. I'm changing to 4.10 gears next week. Hot Cam is on my todo list.
Did you upgrade the valve springs or stick with the LT4s? :)
I bought new LT4 valve springs ($30, Jeff Kopp). Before I installed them, I had them checked at a local machine shop to make sure the open and closed seat pressures were within spec.
I felt ok about the LT4 springs since the LT4 has lightweight valves and retainers unlike the LT1. Having said that, I looked for better springs. All the springs I found either required machining of the cylinder heads to fit (spring OD too big) or the spring wouldn't fit over the stock spring locators (spring ID too small / no aftermarket locator available either). Because of occasional high rpm useage...6600 or so...I felt pretty strongly about having locators versus flat seats. I had visions of a spring doing the "hula hoop" around the spring seat :cry
If anyone has a drop in valve spring/locator/retainer/locks solution, I'm all ears. Most likely I'll yank the heads in the future for port work and have them machined for better springs at that time.
I have my limiter left at 6400 since I don't want to blow engine.
However based on the torque curves I have seen for both stock & modified LT4's the best shift point would be at the limiter. Can't remember seeing any dyno's going above this point, but based on the flatness of torque curves I would quess for maximum performance the shift point should be even higher, probably more so with hot cam & head work.
I haven't seen any after market springs that will fit right into the LT4 heads either. My thinking is the same as yours, when I eventually get to having some head work done then I can decide to upgrade springs or not. May consider the rev kit instead of heavier springs. Makes sense to me to control the lifter body without adding more load to the lifter plunger and all of the moving assembly. But this was a whole other thread that generated a lot of emotions. So not going there for now.
Thanks again. :)
