Two days ago my door ajar light started flashing and my interior light as well started going on and off while I was driving. When I turned the car off and let the alarm set, after a few seconds the alarm would start going off. It was because of the door ajar light would set it off. So now I have been disconnecting the battery. Is this a short or the door sensor going out? I've notices this happened one time during a long rainy day. Well for the last two days here in Florida it's been raining. Has anyone heard of this?????
I had the same problem, and the problem ended up being one of the plungers on the door, that rest against the rear door post when the door is closed. Mine was sticking, and not making good switch contact. I took them both out and cleaned them, sprayed some silicone on the plungers..now... If your Vette is like my '91, you have to have the door panel off to remove the 2 screws from the plunger switch, or be VERY careful, because the flange the screws screw into is loose on the inside of the door, and not tack welded in. The switch wiring simply snaps together... :seeya Good luck!!! (by the way, this will cause your battery to run down after a while, if yours is like mine, the security light in the dash blinked until I got it located and fixed)
Thanks for the info.....I will be taking a look at them tonight! I know what you mean about the battery, I've had to disconnect the battery for the last two days so it wouldn't go dead on me. Thanks again.....
Is this a common problem? My 94 convertible has the same problem, but I was told that being a convertible, it will have more body flex therefore causing the door ajar light to come on sometimes.
I had this problem, but it ended up being my switch on the rear hatch. I had used a hatch-vent and it bent the bracket that held the hatch switch, after finally figuring out what it was, simply bent the bracket back fix the problem.
If you find it is the door switch, you can remove the switch can be accomplished by first removing the top screw of the switch, replace that screw with a screw of the same size only about an inch longer, then remove the bottom screw, this will allow you to pull the switch out an inch and replace the bottom screw to hold the metal plate. Now remove and replace your switch, than reverse directions to reinstall switch in door.
the switch is adjustable, first try to pry the center plunger out a bit, when you shut the door it will adjust the the proper length. BECAUSE THE PLUNGER IS ADJUSTABLE NEVER SPRAY IT WITH ANY KIND OF LUBRICANT. once it is lubricated it will not maintain its adjustment and will need to be replaced. I lubed mine, and when i replaced my switches i had to remove the panel. as i see it unless you are going to cut the wires, the panels got to come off. the plug end (on mine) would not fit through the switch hole.
good luck
:iagree: The switches are adjustable, so try that before you replace anything. My car does the same thing occasionally when it rains. I believe it's because the water gets into the switch and lubricates the adjustment.
To adjust each switch, take a small flat screwdriver and pry out the small pin in the center of the plunger. That fixes mine! I wouldn't lubricate anything, but if you do, make sure it's only the plunger, not the center pin.
Ok, let me make sure I'm understanding everyone. So what you are saying is to try and pull out the stem that hits the door when it's closed? They are ajustable?...... Or is it something that is ajustable once you take the switch off? Sorry I've never dealt with the door switches......
Each switch has a plastic plunger that is pushed in when the door is closed. The plunger going in and out is what turns the interior lights and door ajar lights on and off. The problem is that when one or both of your doors is closed, the plunger is not being pushed in enough to turn everything off. Therefor, you need to make the plunger longer so that it'll be pushed in farther when the door is closed. Fortunately, you can do this; that's where the adjustment comes in.
With the door open, look at the switch. In the middle of the plastic plunger is a pin with a round head that contacts the body of the car when you close the door. You can pry the pin out, which will make the plunger longer and turn everything off when the door is closed. You can do this without taking anything apart, so no, the switch does not have to be removed. Also, you probably won't have to pry the pins out very much to fix the problem. When you close the door for the first time, the plunger will be pushed all the way in and then the pin will be pushed in to the right adjustment, so it doesn't matter if you make it too long. Do that with the switch on each door, and the problem should be fixed, at least until next time you drive in the rain!
I was able to undo the switch and pull the switch and connector thru the hole in the door and then uplug the switch and replace with a new one, all without removing the door panel.

glad it worked out. I had a disco in my car this past summer with the same problem you described. I was going nuts and starting taking the door panel off. Then i decided to ask the forum. Got the same answer you did and it solved my problem. That was 5 months ago and no problems since. The forum is all that and then some.
