93 LT1 Starter Questions

Can the starter on a 93 LT1 (manual trans) be replaced without removing any of the exhaust? What is the best starter shield/wrap to use?

I checked the factory service manual and removing the exhaust is not mentioned as one of the steps for replacing the starter but it looks like at least a portion of the exhaust needs to come off. Can someone tell me for sure if any of the exhaust needs to come off in order to replace the starter. Also what is the best starter shield/wrap to use?
