I got a friend of mine that is a new owner of an 84 cross fire corvette with 105k miles that is having some problems with his vette !! the problem that he is experienceing is that when he floor it ,the engine goes rough and starts to miss fire but at a sudden it goes fine after 2500RPMs !! what do you think it is the problem ?? this vette has been in storage for 3 years !! we are thinking that it is exhaust related problem because after running about 20 mins , the engine from the exhaust was smoking white smoke like a cigarette but it doesn`t smelled like burning oil !!! and we noticed that it was back fireing from the TBIs !!what do you think is the problem  please help
Before you can really figure what is going on with this Crossfire...you must do a complete tune up......right down to the fuel filter.....I mean everything.....after this is complete, you can find out what the problem is....must check the fuel pressure...spark plugs...and wiring.... darn you know what I mean....no easy answer...process of elimination.....do your homework....also run at least 20w/50w valvoline extended milage oil...
Really BASIC STUFF....now go for it and check in later...so we can try to help you...
OK???? OK!!!!!!!
And by the way I have a relly great running CrossFire...it's great when running right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just my humble thought's...HAVE FUN...THAT'S WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT.....
Had an 84 similar miles similar symptoms. Did full tune repaced TPS. Comp. coolant switch. Etc. It wound up being a bad fuel filter. Dont overcomplecate those L83s there not bad.
Hi I have alot of experience with crossfire engines , Not likely
plug or tune up are suspect as it runs good at hi rpm i would start
looking at map sensor , gummed up injectors ( do they have a fine spray
at idle?) also a long shot but check EGR might be open too soon
or does not seal . engines hate the taste of exhaust at low RPMs
but dont mind after 1200 rpm. if you have no check engine lamp
look at those items hope it helps
Your car may run well, never let you down, and never caused you any trouble, but it HAS short comings. Maybe the deficiecys are of no concern to you, but... I stand by my origional statement.
PS. My Crossfire has caused ME no problems, and runs quickly, for a stock Crossfire, so my statement is not one of hate, just fact.
CFI-EFI,
Your right....when the crossfire in my '84 is running good its great.....but when problems happen its a bear to find/fix....guess all vettes share something right.....
Glad yours is running as well as mine....
tony
 :iagree:

RACE ON!!!
Every car has a problem, so I don't understand what your point is?
We changed spak plugs , spark plugs wires , fuel filter , cleaned rotor and distibuter cap and we had no luck still miss fires and smoke coming from exaust !!
Then we made the exhaust duals so we can see from wich side the smoke is coming from , and the smoke was coming from the left side !!
Then we took the plugs out again from the left side and we found plug no #1 coverd with coolant  so thats why it is smoking !! it was coolant !! so the suspects went to a blown head gasket !!
then we took every thing off and we found a blown head gasket and a cylinder looks like orange squash !!
so next is we will get the new gaskets and put it back together !!
take the crossfire setup off & throw it in the garbage...then install a new intake & carb! :jester :p:
A carb will hardly improve performance on an otherwise stock engine. You will only loose MPG. To see any real gain you need a better set of heads and a better cam to go with the carb. Of cource those mods will improve the performance when using a Cross-Fire intake too.

just changint the intake will help a bunch, my friends bone stock 84 just put on a carb & intake & he beats tuned ports no problem....try doing that with the crossfire! if you dont think an intake will help than why will an x-ram make a crossfire perform better....its only an weidland intake? oh yeah the crossfire intake is half casted on purpose from gm because they knew the tuned port would be coming out! check out http://www.xram.com personally i had one & i still wasnt happy with the power(or lack there of)! :jester

With a modified Cross-Fire you beat stock tuned ports too, so that does not say much.
I know about the xram and that web-site. He is selling the intake so he is probably a bit biased on the web-site. You tried it and probably found some hp, but as you say not enough. That indicates that the Cross-Fire intake was not the only thing to blame for the lack of hp. When you later changed to the carb I suspect that you changed a lot of others thing at the same time. Things like heads, cam and maby a stroker crank. In that case I am not surprised that you would smoke a Cross-Fire or a TPI.
Throwing a carb on a stock Cross-Fire longblock is still not the solution to great performance.

yeah i took the old boat anchor out & bought a crate engine....however my friend just simply removed the crossfire setup & instaklled a carb & intake & the car really performs awsome. i drove it ....its like night & day! :yesnod: im sure you could get a crossfire to perform.....but its just not worth all the bs!for a couple of hundres dollars & a few hours work you can have a 84 that actually performs! :jester jmho
