I just purchased an optima battery for my 1992 lt1. The optima does ot fit the tray. :mad Has anyone else experenced this and if so how did you correct it?
even when I bought my optima it didn`t fit but I cut off the side of the battery tray and now it fits !! all you have to do just cut where it don`t fits
The Optima red top is the next battery I will buy.....maybe even the yellow top.....what ever...read enough to see it does the job......the battery in my '84 is now ('97) 5 years old, but at this time is still going strong.....OPTIMA....can't go wrong......
At least thats only my thought's....

Ok guys I cut the battery tray, but now the side panel will not go on. The side panel knocks right into the battery and makes the side panel stick out about in inch for the original location. This battery is just to big. The Optima battery model # is SC34U. Is this the wrong battery for the car? What battery part # are you guys using?
Mine says "Red 34/78" so it is probably the same size. I had to trim the tray on both sides and the battery overhangs the tray towards the center of the car a good bit.
Mine is a 96 so it may be a bit different. I trimmed the tabs on both sides and put the battery in with the hold down bolt loose. Make sure and check to see that the positive battery post is not too close to the Cruise Control support bracket. I had to grind mine a small amount.
With the battery still loose install the side panel. Move the battery outboard until it is 1/8" or so from the panel and tighten it down.

That's what I had to do...
Also, I had to cut a notch out of the cruise control bracket to fit the battery because of the top + post...
Lets see if this link works for the picture of the notched CC bracket...
I'm sorry I can't help answer your question regarding your battery but can you tell me where you got your wheels from. I also have a 92 but my original wheels are in pretty bad shape.
Thanks
Iguess I will stick with my WalMart battery, if it is that much trouble to put it in. At least no one can see it when you put the side panel on. :smash:
The wheels are OE concepts. Fit and look is great!!!
An update on the battery. The battery I originally had was to big. I returned it to interstate locally and they gave me the correct one. The new battery is about two inches smaller and has the same power output as the big one. The battery now fits perfectly without modification,
Just replaced my Impala's red Optima after 3 years. A real pricey battery with no real advantagesb (except for the cool look). This time I went with a $49.99 AutoZone special.
I can't believe you notched the steel bracket! I sawed off part of the Optima + terminal post to clear the bracket, and covered the stub with 2 layers of electrical tape. This is a serious fire hazard, IMO. :)
I also snipped off about 1/8" of the ends of the two plastic tabs in the left end of the battery tray. Wonder why Optima doesn't manufacture their Group 75 battery to industry standard dimensions! Their Group 78 has the side posts too close together, also.

I wanted to keep the warranty on the battery... I don't think they'd honor it if I cut the positive post off the top...
Also, I forgot to mention that the positive cable is a bit stretched to reach the terminal, those are pretty close together...
I do wish they'd make a battery without the top posts... Who uses those anymore (I know older cars do)... :D
