I know many of you have them and they are in the MAD/Ecklers catalogs but for $40-$50. Seems like I could go the radioshack and get a switch for a few bucks to do the same thing. Have any of you done this? If so how did you do it?
It depends on the current draw, but a good mercury tilt switch should do it.
Make sure to mount it on enough of an angle so acceleration won't false trigger the lights.
Another option would be a magnetic reed switch use to trigger a relay. Mount the magnet in close proximity to the switch with the hood closed, and when you open it, the contact will close, tripping the relay and firing up the lights.
Or just go to the boneyard and take a switch out of a luxury car.
Cut one wire (in the middle) leading to your fuse holder. Connect the wires from a 12V TOGGLE switch ($5). Using a piece of aluminum (black anodize is preferred to blend with the engine compartment) 1/8" thick X 1" wide X 2" long, drill a hole in one end to allow the mounting of your switch. Drill a small screw hole in the other end which will be mounted using the existing screw that holds your liner to your fender (just above the fuse holder). Place the aluminum in the mounting position so you can determine the bend required. Bend the aluminum (in the middle) to suit application of the switch. Insert the bracket between the liner and fender, and reattach the screw. 10 minute job.
