I have an 85 C4 with a problem with one of the headlights. After having the lights on and then turning them off, the drivers side light returns to normal off normal. The pasenger side stays up. If I open the hood, the pasenger side light will return to normal off position.
Does this sound like a short or an adjustment problem or what?
Check the horn wires and anything else that could block the free movement of the light unit. I was working on my fan wires and inadvertantly left a horn wire in the way on the driver's side - same thing happened! There's not much room under there for the lights to swing. Good luck. :seeya
Check both screws on each side of the headlight cover. Sometimes one will back out and prevent the headlight from closing. Also, you might have a defective LH headlight door relay. The headlight motor has contacts in them that are activated by motor torque at the end of their travel (each way). These contacts look like relay contacts and they set up the motor connection for reversing direction and when worn they don't make connection and the door won't close. You have to take apart the motor to see the condition of these contacts. Try swapping the RH door relay to the left side and see if the door opens and closes. If so, buy a relay.
jfb is on the right track. The "limit" switches go bad and need to be cleaned. If you don't have a burnishing tool, take a book of matches and cut off the lighting strip where you strike the matches. Insert it beween the contacts and move it up and down. Turn it over to do the other contacts. That should take care of it. You can pretty much prove that it is the contacts by banging with your fist on the hood to the inside of the light. If that makes the light turn the problem is not in the relay.
While on the subject; does anyone know of a source for the contacts and thermal shut off in the headlight assembly in a 85?
If your light is coming right down when you open the hood I would think something is blocking it. You have several things running around the headlamp. I just replaced my isolation relays and the problem I had was that my headlamps would stay up when the lights were turned off whether or not the hood was up or down.
