Lately I'll notice my fasten belt light come on while I'm driving. It'll come on very gradually, then usually disappears instantly. Sometimes it'll be on for a second, sometimes for 5 minutes.
Is there a sensor that can actually tell when my belt isn't fastened, and maybe it's going out? Or is it just supposed to come on when the car is initially started and never again?
Basically I'm interested in whether I should be looking for a sensor or a short.
Check the seat belt wire connector under the seat for a solid connection. That would be the easiest fix. My '93 GM manual shows the seat belt lamp switch as part of the Central Control Module, which is solid state, and no adjustment is possible. I don't know if your '88 has a CCM. My other manuals do not cover your specific problem. Maybe some '88 owners can help. Good luck.
I checked the connection going into the seat belt itself and it seemed to be as solid as possible, and the wire looked visibly okay. I can't find anything relating to the fasten belt light trouble diagnosis in my particular service manual, but I did go ahead and check the resistence on the wire going into the seatbelt, and it measured about 250 ohms.
I left it unplugged just to see what would happen, and when I started the car the light came on like normal, and went off after a few seconds as expected. I gave it a test drive and the light came on after a little while, then went off again. No change in my problem, even with the connection at the belt severed.. I guess this means my belt connection itself isn't problematic, but maybe a relay or something? Anyone know where a relay would be for this? Unfortunately I didn't get the electrical companion to my service manual.
