Default charging

At idle i get 11.5 volts and at speed i get 13.8. Barring the fusable link is good and also the battery can an alternator be bad with the volatge reading I am getting?

This is a common complaint from L98 owners. Read my reply in your post about alternator brushes, I explained how I eliminated that problem by going to a 96 LT1 140 Amp alternator.

At idle your alternator cannot deliver its current rating, so if you have a heavy electrical load, your battery will be supplying current and the voltage will be the battery voltage which is 13.2 v fully charged and 12.0 discharged. Also, I would measure the battery voltage at idle ON the battery terminals because there is some voltage drop (usually about 0.3 v) where the dash voltmeter makes its measurement. When driving, you spend very little time with the engine idling, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I have an '84 vette...am using the tuff stuff 140amp chrome altenator...without any problems......you might give this a try....www.tuffstuff.com I believe....but PowerMaster is also a good altenator to use...up to you....I'm very happy...at least up to now....never know...what tomorrow will bring...
Also I'm using the March Pulley System.....14.9 volts no problem...happy...happy...happy...
