The problem is removing the regulator assembly, it does not simply unbolt like the older GM alternators, it's really a pita that involves breaking plastic parts.
I wouldn't even mess with it, go buy a 1996 LT1 alternator, it's much better, much higher amperage and maintains voltage at idle much better. The cost is only $130 from Discount auto parts, and thats foir a new unit. Of course, it is a little larger, but will fit the stock brackets with a little file work to widen the upper bracket to fit the mount ear. The charging wire ring terminal will have to be cut as well, and replaced with a larger terminal as the charging post is slightly larger in diameter.
I made this change after going through two 1987 stock alternators, and have never been happier.
He didn't say your alternator was bad. He said he recommends replacing your alternator with one that has higher current capacity rather than replacing the brushes which isn't easy.
