Default Newbie

I just bought an 85 Vette with a 1990 angle plug aluminum head engine. (or so the former owner claims) Anyway the motor has a few thrown rods, and Im going to have to rebuild the bottom end. (I think) I don't know much about these engines, but I know I want more hp/tq than they have stock. I was thinking of putting a stroker kit/nitrous kit on while the engine is out. Any suggestions, or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah and how tough is the 4+3 ?? could/can I put a T-56 from a 89-93 vette in?
One more question (sorry) I can get an LT-1 with 6 speed tranny how tough would it be to drop that in instead?? Thanks

HoleShot on the forum is doing well with a 383 stroker tpi

Nitrous requires a minimum of forged pistons, forged crank and rods would be good

The biggest bottleneck to hp on the L98 is the TPI. there are a few alternatives. You can buy larger intake base, and runners (Joe90 has a great setup with those) or Lingenfelter/Accel make the SuperRam and TPiS makes the MiniRam. The SuperRam and MiniRam require matching cams.

The L98 aluminum heads from the '90 (d-ports) are descent heads.

The T-56 is a project to swap. Some have done it, but the consensus is the ZF6 is an easier swap. The 4 in the 4+3 is strong, Scorp is putting some dexcent power through his. The +3 part (the overdrive unit) does give some forum members headaches. If they're maintained, they seem to hole up fine.

Not sure about the lt1 swap, as I'm not aware of anyone doing it.

oh, and welcome to the forum :seeya

welcome to the forum
the swapping can be a mixed bag. just changing the motor's out (L98 to LT1) wouldn't be that hard, the big difference is in the computer and wiring ect. you would need a complete ECM/harness/sensors from a LT1 car to make it work.
However, if you can pick up the LT1/6spd for a good price then it might be worth it just to get the ZF6spd. putting the ZF6spd in is a good swap and it will hook up to your current motor (with some floorboard and clutch mod's, may have to get some other parts).
if you go with a 383ci motor you'll need other mod's to make it run correctly (reprogrammed chip, ported or better intake ect ect).
better have a set price that you'd be willing to spend before deciding.

The 4+3 is a Borg Warner Super T-10 4-speed with the CC 2.88:1 1st gear ratio set in it. The 2-speed overdrive unit is basically a powerglide. She should be able to handle a good bit of abuse. Make sure you change the fluid and filter in your overdrive at least once per year.

The 4+3 is fairly stout, it was used in Callaway TTs. So it should be able to take a whipping. T56 is not a great tranny, in my opinion. It was not used in 89-93s from the factory, that was the ZF6.

For a stroker you should go with forged internals esp if you want juice or a supercharger.

Just know that it wont make the best power until you change the intake setup to MR or SR.

I think Im going to stick with the 4+3 and see how it holds out. Then beef up the internals/mini ram (TPIS) with nitrous. Im on a limited budget so I need to do this as cheeply as possible. Thanks for the replies  I posted this same message on another forum and got ZERO replies :mad

I would check on a crate engine you are better off in the long run, they do make 383 strokers and you get a warranty to boot then get a chip for the computer. good luck!
