Well, it's the first time I've ever driven the ole girl at night and noticed the motors keep going for a few seconds after they open or close.
what can I do to fix this problem before it becomes a big headache?
You’re due for every C4 owner’s favorite job, the headlight motor bushing replacement. Sadly I don’t have the SKU for the bushing you can get at any Home Depot for pennies on the dollar handy and won’t until this weekend. Places online will sell you a brass gear and the bushings for like $30. Don’t bother, the gear is probably fine, the bushings inside it have just turned to powder after all these years.
ChrisFix on youtube has a video walkthrough on doing the job, give it a look.

Thank you, boss. So a bushing is what's causing the 3 second *clack clack-clack clack* , after it reaches full open and close? Lol I guess my hopes on "quick/easy" jobs on these cars can be tossed out the window.
I'll read thru the thread, as well. Thank you again.

My bushing was fine but the large gear was toast....same symptom as mentioned by the OP. You can get the gears and the necessary grease for not too much cash.

it appears you have a very different car from the OP, going by your forum avatar. If I recall correctly the headlight motor design was changed, which could explain why the later body styles had bushing issues and the earlier ones had gear issues.
