easy cubic inch question
Posted this in engine mods and all I hear over there is crickets. I don't know, but I'm sure a lot of you guys do. How do you make a 427 and a 455? Do they both start with 400 small blocks?

Yes it would have to be a 400 block.
For the 427: 4.185 bore (over 60) and a 3.875 stroke or 4.125 bore and a 4.00 stroke.
The 4.00 stroke is more common. The .60 overbore would require a Motown or other aftermarket block.

Yes the factory 427s were big blocks. However if you are going to make one out of small block use a 400 block or aftermarket block. Monty has a 427 small block, but built it out of a tall deck Dart block. He is usually in the engine tech area.
You could make a 45x out of a small block but that is big $ I remember Sonny Leonard made one out of a Olds Rocket block (small block derived) The factory 455s were all made in various forms from Olds, Buick, and Pontiac.

there was some other old timer in a book out by hot rod called building mosnter small blocks or something like that.
He build a 482, and a few 454 SBC.
He used the 400 blocks but only used blocks, where he found there to be minimal core shift.

I thought maybe the 427 was a small block since Lingenfelter is a big fan of the 427TT.
The 427 engines of the midyears started as the 396 big block that today is 454 or 502 in most engines seen. The 396 was the first street version of the mystery "porcupine head" engines run in Nascar. The 65 Vette had a 396-425 Hp, then the engine was bored to 4.25" for 66 to make it the legendary 427. Many thousands of Malibu SSs were made with various versions of the 396 from 66 until the early 70s. All of them BBC engines.

The olds 455 is a wierd motor... its neither a small or big block. it was also the basis for the Caddy 500... but thats another story. the kinship is a strange connect the dots, but as I understand it, it exist....
Sprint cars use big smallblocks all the time, 410s and 430s...

LPE has used C5Rs block and Darton resleeved LS1s. http://www.sdpc2000.com/ has C5R 427 blocks for $6,200. I believe a sleeved block runs around $2,800 plus core. The LS1 is not the same small block as the C4 and before Corvettes.

Bogus, The olds 455 is not related to the Caddy 500. That engine started as a 472 and became a 425 and then a 368 before it died in '81. The Olds engine was a breed all it's own as was the buick 455 and the pont 455 ........ GM waisted a lot of money making similar sizes but all different engines in those days. I do quite a bit with the 500 Caddies and it's a lot of fun and it's cheap torque........

I'm not planning on swapping motors for a while, but trying to get my info straight incase I come accross good deals here and there. Might decide to just upgrade what I have to work with. Supercharged or TT 383 wouldn't be bad. I appreciate the info guys.
