Default Help me choose a new cam

I can't decide which cam to use. I don't want to go too big and I'd like to have a chance at passing smog. Since I do wo well with my cam now, I'm inclined to go bigger. I'd like to push the peak HP up for more RWHP. Here are the cams I am considering:

Comp Extreme Energy 230/236 duration .544/.555 lift 108 cl 112 lsa
or
Cam Motion designed for my set up 231/237 duration .565/.582 lift 110 cl 114 lsa

Any thoughts? I'm kind of stupid when it comes to cams.

I personally love the Comp cams, but I highly doubt you will ever see a pass slip at the emissions station. Good luck!

I opted for a custom ground cam. I went with 236/242 duration and 575/575 lift on a 112 lsa. I will be using 1.5 rockers. I dont want the geometry thrown off by a higher ratio rocker, so i threw in the extra lift on the cam. But comp cams are good stuff.

I am in the same boat as you are and am going with the cam just below that one (EE 224/230). I would think with your mods, the 230/236 cam should be the ticket. What cam do you have in there now? Is this just for the street, or do you drag race, autocross or road race also? What gear ratio do you have?

I'm going with Comp Cams roller for LT-1's in a 220/230 @ .50 and .510/.510 on lift for my 383 stroker LT-1 that I'm building. Should be a decent cam.....
plus 1.6 on a 3/8 stud Cranes gold race rockers that are self aligning.

You have to be very careful when selecting a cam for a SR equiped car. THe SR intake does not like alot of duration at all. You would have no use for a duration of 230 @50 or more unless the cam lift was in the .590 + range. It just does not like it. Most cam manufacturers do not know this because almost none of them have ever conducted tests with the SR intake. I have the specs at home for a great SR cam that will get you 400RWHP out of a 383 with heads that flow at least 285 on the intake side and a ported SR. If you want them let me know. Shoot me an email off the list. Address is in my profile.

I've got a Comp 224/236, .510i / .520e, 114 lsa. It's not in the catalog. Cam Help came up with it and had it ground for me.

What I'd really like to see is how your motor would respond to test pipes being installed in place of your cats. Just for testing purposes only. ;)

I would not expect there to be much of a difference would you? I would guess 5-10 rwhp. This is just a guess. I think they flow 350 cfm each or something like that. The Hi flow center cat flows I think 580 cfm. I'd have to check these figures with Random Tech. Since I don't have to pass smog because I drive less than 5000 miles I don't need cats. However, I do feel a goofy sense of responsibilty to use technology that is avaliable that will clean my tailpipe. I think we all should to protect the hobby we all enjoy before someone really decides to crackdown.

Anyone dyno B4 and after cats to see what they gained?

I've got no idea what you'd gain taking the cats out. That's why I'd like to see. I know Scorp compared my motor to yours and one of the glaring differences were the cats vs no cats. I'd just like to see how much of a difference they make.

I'm converting from a 6 spd to and auto this winter so I'll get an idea of the loss there. The one problem comparing the auto to 6 spd losses is that at my motor leaked down 15 % before that dyno session and I'm also going to fix those problems.

Took off my high flow cats and put the off road pipes on my 396. Picked up 10HP and 15LBS of torque. The torque was up everywhere on the curve. The noise level is up as well. Having the Power Effects exhaust helps as I keep the mufflers shut around town.

I use to work for a cam grinder in SoCal a life time ago, and the saying is when in dought under camming is better than too much! Comp cams is a great company and talk to the tech reps and tell them what you intend to do and what mods you have done and be honest to them. Its cool to have a lumpy cam, but is quite another to live with it! Hope it helps.

Have you tried(or considered) the 74219 ?

It might be a good cam for your cubes, and it's especially suitable for the super ram :yesnod:

JD I have not tried the 219 but I did consider it when I first built the motor. I feel now that I would be going backwards with that cam. That's just a hunch though.

I was going to suggest the 219 myself.

Looksing at his SR 420 motor with the 219 (CNC brodix heads)making ~510 hp and 560 TQ.
Some say the 219 is small, well it would be really small for the 420 then??? seems to work here...
I wish I would of done this on my engine build.

the 74219 will work fine with big cube engines. LPE uses that cam in one of their 420 pkgs that makes over 500 hp.

Dont let its "small" size fool you.

I like the Cam Motion cams..

Look at the power Joe90 was making with his 350, LTRs, and CNC heads

Default 74219

. Like others had mentioned, that little bumpstick makes some nasty hp and tq(LOTS of Torque). new92racers '90 went in the 10's at 124 mph(420-LPE) with that cam. It has a LOT of potential. Don't rule it out.

Not ruling it out at all. Its a proven cam for sure. I like to be a little different and try different things. Kinda makes for more excitement. I have a cam that I want in my head. Now I need to find a cylinder head guru. Any ideas?
