86 starter issue?

86 starter issue?
So I have been having so inconsistent no crank issues. I believe it is the starter but when I went to charge the battery and put it back it it slowly started follow buy some smoke. I let run for about 10 minutes turned off and trying to turn it on and no crack agian. I know I need the change the starter but it is something else. Thanks love the forum guy!!

I can't say for certain. Perhaps start with 2 simple things. Test the battery and see if it is good. They might need to charge it for a few hours first. In the meantime, take the starter to a shop and have it tested. Hopefully something is broke there. IF not, it might be the wire going to the starter that is bad. But first things first. After that, if it doesn't start, put an idiot light on the exciter wire of the starter and have someone crank it. If it lights, we know the starter gets the signal.
